Useful little article from RA about Subtractive synths http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1351

Most peeps in this thread probably know all about this but there is still some good info.

I had been eyeing this Post O’alls Royal Traveler vest in “southern” chambray to wear year round here in the South. This will be my fourth Post O’alls piece and I have nothing but amazing things to say about what Takeshi is doing with Post.

Anyone have any opinions on the Arp Axxe? I might have a chance to grab one for a decent price.

whats the price? make sure it's one of the j-wire keyboards and not the membrane cos those are awful and not worth if you plan on using the keys. I have one, got it serviced recently and it's a beast.

Tomorrow morning I'm picking up a DX7 for $250 in near mint condition with two cartridges and breath controller. Pretty stoked. Now to try to find those Sakamoto patches online...

So I ended up passing on the Arp Axxe I mentioned earlier but now that I unexpectedly have a job and don't need to dedicate my savings to future rent I have about $1000 - 1500 to dedicate to finally buying a really good synth. I am considering something from Sequential Circuits (600 or Pro-One?) or maybe an Arp Odyssey. This is really a huge step for me because all I have ever had was a Casio CZ-1000 that I have owned since I was 16. I am still doing a lot of research so if anyone has any suggestions or advice I would appreciate it.

are you totally set on that vintage? Dave Smith Prophet 08 is just dreamy. the keyb version kisses $2k, but the module hovers at $1500. but yeah given my affinity there, if you can find a Pro-One...

I'm not as experienced with Arps so I can't advise there.

Get a Roland SH-101, you'd even have some money left over for the keytar grip.

luv richard devine. not sure im quite sold on the tempest, though. im more excited for the new linn drum, which obv wont come out for awhile as to not detract from dsi sales. check out the devine video with the timefog. its just a midi controller, but he put together a really cool max patch to use it with.

got the machinedrum and while it's fun as hell to program i only seem to be able to get sounds/patterns best suited for techno/house than the synthpo/r&b stuff we do. gonna have to throw this fish back in the water i think.
that's right bitch

i honestly have more fun with cutting up effecting and arranging drum samples on my computer + a trigger pad than i do with an analog drum machine and you arent limited to in the box sounds. although, the tempest is essentially a dave smith 6 voice synth, so you get way more options in sounds than you would any other analog drum machine.
