my 15mm f2.8 fisheye arrived yesterday and I whipped it out for my friends' band's reunion show (second band pictured). I used my 24mm f2.4 for the first three. unfortunately I wasn't all that prepared and halfway through the fisheye set, my external flash batteries (and the backup pack) died. oh well.

those are great Joseph. I like the progression you've made with live photos; less extreme processing but excellent light /composition / feeling

thanks man, really appreciate it. been making some great personal strides in learning about the technical side of photography both pre-process and post-processing this past ~4 months, which has resulted in less extensive processing in terms of compensation. a lot easier to edit when you get the camera settings right whilst shooting, as we all know.

all the more impressive cause i know it's hard as hell to get a good composition in that kind of environment.

took the fisheye out with a few of my friends and explored a couple of familiar places in detroit. not pictured: the white castle we ate and the resulting bowel movements.

Well poop. A girl that is booking me for her wedding just landed on a venue...and it's the darkest restaurant in the city.

I'm not sure the t1i is going to be up to the challenge.

bounce flash or wireless slave, but is it going to be so dark it'll be hard to focus?

rather than relying on one guy to go through this thread and pick out the best, why don't we have a thread where each person gets to post their single most favorite photo of the year (that they took)?

I didn't post this one here in my earlier set and it's not my personal favorite from the year, but it's different from all the others in a technical way.

Image
(Really needs to be seen large)

It's made up of 30 individual shots that were merged in PTGui and then perspective-corrected to look straight on rather than upward from below. One strange side-effect of this is you don't see the dome in the background, because I couldn't see it from beneath where I was taking the individual shots, but if this perspective existed in reality (which I don't think it could, given the other buildings surrounding the square) you'd definitely see it. There's some distortions and such but I was still surprised by how well it came out overall.

The original TIFF output was 14869x17329, 2.06gb

hey freelance dudes—

I'm doing a photo editing gig at a tournament later this month, the contract sez
The Contractor fully understands the Company is required by law to report all non-employee compensation of $600 or more to the IRS

I'm going to be making less than that, does that mean I don't need to bother reporting it on my taxes? Haven't done any freelance before and not planning to do any more this year, if that make a difference.

depends how you get paid and how much of your total income that equals. if it's cash, then fuck no, don't report that shit.

also check with your local state laws. for example, if you make a certain amount as a wedding photographer in texas, then the money you earn from weddings is non-taxed because you're providing a service to the state.

one of the reasons why I'm considering a move to texas. that and everything else being tax-free.

if you're an independent contractor they have to 1099 your ass if they pay you above $600

this does NOT mean they won't 1099 you if they pay you less than $600. it depends on the policy of the company who is paying you. some companies will 1099 all vendors. ask the company

(fwiw, 1099 means they send the IRS a form that says they paid you $$, and then the IRS can check what you reported to make sure you reported the income you were paid)

what's the difficulty and process of flying with photo gear? I'll be doing a little traveling in February and haven't flown since I was 14 and wasn't into photography.

can I bring my thinktank bag with my camera body, three lenses, and other junk as a carry on? am I going to be anal probed?

You should be fine. I flew Atlanta to London with 2 camera bodies, a laptop, 5 or 6 lenses, batteries, chargers, filters and other assorted gear, plus another full bag with all my clothes and personal stuff. Stored both in the overhead compartment - my camera bag was made to fit under a typical plane seat, but wouldn't fit under mine for some reason even though it would've worked under the seat next to mine. Coming back, because I was on a different airline, I ended up just checking my clothes bag and carrying the camera gear on. Basically you never, ever want to check your camera gear.

As far as security goes, no one asked me any questions or even wanted to look in the bag beyond the typical x-ray scanner. I was really surprised. When we were boarding there was a couple TSA people stopping random people to check people with larger bags before boarding and they just waved me on even though I probably had the heaviest/bulkiest bag in the whole line. I'm sure it's all random to some extent but I was prepared to answer at least a few questions about some of the more unusual looking camera stuff I brought.

The bag in question: http://products.lowepro.com/product/Fas ... 087,14.htm

I just have a little anxiety over breaking my camera gear at this point because I'm uninsured. But, thanks, and I should be fine.

Won't be traveling during peak season, so I'm sure that helps a little bit.
