which trigger pad do you use? i feel like our drum approach is so assbackwards. we sample drums hits from records we like and cut them up and arrange them in ableton then run it into protools.

demos written and recorded over the past few days, all music done on a juno 106 except for the guitar:

got one of these off EBAY for $200 recently.
seems like people aren't into this one because there aren't any parameter controls on the unit itself. it certainly doesn't bother me since i'm strictly using it as a module with midi control. kinda hard to beat an analog polysynth with total midi control for 200 bucks. the only drag for me right now is it seems quite difficult to save custom patches. regardless, i'm pretty over the moon.

i doubt anyone uses it to play out since it's a bit clunky to edit. can't imagine a cheaper more flexible quality poly though.

Would you recommend the MPK49? I'm thinking about picking up a Mopho, and want to grab a new controller with pads to play with it.

the desktop mopho or the one w/ keys? if you just want pads get the mpd24. they are more touch responsive and you get bigger pads and more room to maneuver, and its only like 160 bucks. but yeah, the mpk49 is fine for an all in one. when i bought it, it was either that or the comparable novation, and the akai was better, although, you may like the automapped lcd visuals of the novation, but the pads are weird and laid out unconventionally

i'm gonna grab the desktop mopho. trying to decide between either buying a dedicated pad controller like the mpd24 to use with the oxygen25 that I currently have, or just springing for an all-in-one like the mpk49

This doesn't feel like the right thread for this question, but whatever. I've been fucking around in Traktor for a little while and lately the audio's coming out weird. The faders are set in the middle but songs play back too fast, and they're distorted as well -- the audio does a patchy static thing. I haven't changed any of the settings to my knowledge, and I've tried to make sure all the nobs are at zero, that the decks aren't set to sync, etc. Anyone have a clue what's up? I want to avoid deleting and resintalling. Screenshot of my settings below.

Deleted Traktor 1.2 or whatever it was, set up a new Traktor 2 install, and the sound is still coming out the same -- choppy, wavering, too fast. But songs play just fine in VLC, Winamp, iTunes, etc. Thinking something must be corrupted in Windows, like the codec might be fucked. So annoying.

finally got all of my synths up and running again. My friend sold me his DX7 MIDI controller, so now I'm trying to figure out how to program that with my DX7 II. Been making some sick jamzzzzz with that and my Juno 60.

woah bit late with this reply but it sounds like your sample rate may be set at 48kHz.
go into Prefs, and change it back to 44.1kHz. that should do the trick.

The Machinedrum is fucking incredible! I can see Max's point -- I definitely get the feeling that nudges one towards making techno but I've always felt more or less that way about drum machines in general. Plus it's sampling capabilities (well, the UW version at least) are incredible. So far I'm just blown away by how flexible all of the drum synths are -- you can make a snare out of a cowbell sample or a weird atmospheric pad out of a bass drum no problem. Plus, parameter locks are mindblowing. All gear should do that.

Oh, hey John! How did you know it was me? Psyched for you about that Hooker Vision 7 inch! I'm going to try to release a bunch of stuff this year but I've kind of changed my sound and compositional strategy up a lot recently and I'm not so sure it's ready for prime time just yet. Got an LP of some older material with some rad Robert Beatty cover art coming out sometime pretty soon.

Id recognize that set up anywhere :)
Hit me with yr address so i can drop one in the post

To add to this thread, i picked up a MFOS 16 step sequencer to connect to a micromoog. Sooo stoked to set up polyrhythmic weirdness to jam a sax along to. Think i need to pick up an s-trig to 1/4" converter tho so i need to find a good spot to grip one

Maybe not the right thread for this since this seems to be mostly hardware but can someone recommend a good drum synth for the iPad? Should have midi support.

I've seen a few products but nothing that people seem to highly recommend.

I'm looking to pipe this into genome sequencer with animoog.

I don't really know what the difference is between a controller and a sequencer (if there is one at all), but it's the QX5

I haven't gotten the opportunity to fuck around with it to find all of its functionalities, but I don't think I can edit the hardware with it.

That's a midi sequencer. If I know anything about 80's hardware MIDI sequencers, it's probably got a really cryptic, difficult menu system. You definitely can't program it with your DX7, but you could use it to send sequences to your DX. If you don't have a whole lot of MIDI gear to sequence and a lot of patience, fuck that thing. Just get a USB-->MIDI box and sequence with Logic or Ableton or something.

I just traded my SH-09 for an Oberheim Matrix-6. I'll probably kick myself later, but it's pretty fun to be able to play more than one note at a time. My Machinedrum and Shruthi-1 fit very nicely on the massive dead space on top of the keyboard, too.

Postby jett » Thu Feb 09, 2012 12:04 pm

can anyone help me out with a recc for a good midi controller/keyboard?

main things i want are a keyboard with aftertouch, faders or knobs that i can use to dj with/do keyboardless effect automation with, and drum/sample pads and manipulation capabilities

i was looking at the akai mpk25 but if there are any better options I'd love to know about them (p.s. I'm not very experienced with setting up midi routing or building max patches to handle messages or anything like that, so easy of use would also be a plus i suppose (though I'm not averse to getting my hands dirty with that stuff if the payoffs are worth it))

edit: forgot to say my budget is around 200€

i'm using a novation 25SL MkII and it suits be great. automap is a breeze on it as long as your DAW and plug-ins are legit. should be within your budget too.
