If any of you like your death metal progressive with jazzy elements (Atheist and Cynic are two of my favorite bands) you should check out Coprofago from Chile. This may be old news, who knows, but just in case:

Progressive riffs, brutal vocals, an outstanding technical bassist, insane drumming, and weird from-out-nowhere Django Reinhardt blink-and-you-miss-them breakdowns.

Hilarious that you just posted that Merrimack. They're playing right now. The fact I'm here posting this should give you an indication of how exciting they are.

Zzzzz

Thanks for the Hail of Bullets, been meaning to find that for a while.

The Merrimack is a damn good album.
Hail of Bullets is definitely on the snooze side for me.

*shrug* can't please all the people all the time
I get the feeling a lot of people don't like them because they have crystal clear production, or they aren't "trve" or whatever, it's just good black metal to me, up there with the best of 09.

Immortal have crystal clear production as well, and rule. Merrimack just can't write interesting songs.

CRUCIFIST - Demon Haunted World - 2009

Image

Featuring bassist Danny Lilker (BRUTAL TRUTH etc.) and guitarist John Gallo (of US doom lords ORODRUIN), Crucifist’s debut album was a long time coming until finally, after several opportunities fell through for the band, Profound Lore came in to help the band finally get this album of theirs out, after we pretty much salivated after hearing the material that inevitably would grace this head/fist banging feast.

A sinister mix of old school blackness that reference such elite acts as CELTIC FROST/HELLHAMMER, VENOM, BATHORY, AUTOPSY along with a slight NWOBHM feel that can’t help but bleed from John Gallo’s awesome guitar riffs (especially seeing that Gallo is one of the great guitarists of doom metal today).

Along with such acts as Aura Noir, Nifelheim, Midnight, and Villains, Crucifist are one of the very few bands today that can deliver such a vibe that brings that ancient spirit back from such glory days. A definite rarity these days especially considering all these other bigger and newer bands getting praised for bringing back or “reviving” that elusive era of years past, bands like Crucifist will pretty much serve as the fist in the face to all these other bands.

Tracklisting for “Demon Haunted World” goes as follows:

1. Pursuit Of The Pious
2. Putrid Mother Lode
3. Skull Smashing Face Ripping Death
4. Honor
5. Curse Of The Plasma Hound
6. Tumefaction
7. Neon Corpse
8. Demon Haunted World
9. Witchgrip
10. Angel Of Death
11. Anus Mundi

Nachtmystium destroyed tonight. Was interesting to see them onstage at a large venue/with big sound. Had only seen them in small clubs before. They rule in both settings. One of the best, most exciting bands out there right now.

Marduk were Marduk- perfectly adequate and certainly decent live, but will always be B-list with the possible exception of Panzer Division Marduk.

I liked Mantic Ritual better live than I do on record, but Toxic Holocaust has my vote as most fun neo-thrash band, both live and on record.

Didn't catch Black Anvil tonight, but I've seen them tons, including when they opened for Marduk at the same venue a few months ago. They're pretty ill, psyched to see what they do next. NYBM, Son. What?

I like my retro thrash to be a little more varied, TH always kinda struck me as a bit bland, but I will give them another shot based on your words!
I have a shitload of awesome stuff coming, just a lot of great/underrated death metal and the like.

I like the old school way too, but I'm a sucker for a ton of riffs too, ala blood tsunami.

I like TH because they have some punky flavor, like a lot of the original thrash outfits. A lot of these retro-thrash dudes are too techy/nerded out for my taste.

Doomy, sludge record with a psych bent to it. been playing this a lot recently.

This band are incredible, epic hawkwind esque doom with a healthy dose of swans in there to keep it brutal.
their live show involves cowls, blood, skulls and more dry ice than a cher concert. Its really intense and violent.
the lp is available on feat of tentacles records and i would thoroughly recommend it and pretty much the entire catalogue of releases from them for those who enjoy to collect.

I have been loving the Ofermod and Negative plane records a lot this year, the Ofermod is astounding.

We should probably discuss this.

Image

Yes, it's way too late. Yes, 3/4 of the "big four" have been terrible for much longer than they were ever good at this point. Yes, it is unclear who is even in Megadeth and Anthrax these days.

All that.

Still . . .

Hard to know this is happening and not even consider going.

They're doing this in Poland and Switzerland too, with more dates to be announced, but this looks like the best one when you consider the city -Prague - and the partners in crime - Mastodon and Heaven & Hell.

Yeah, I saw Heaven and Hell live with Priest last year.

They're OK, nothing spectacular.

Still, figure Mastodon & H&H as openers in Prague is a better total package than Mastodon & Behemoth opening in Poland.
