shirts optional wrote:the fact that the rivals of a major party's candidate are comparing him to a mere child's toy is flummoxing in 2012

and, of course, hilarious

why is it flumoxing or childish?

the rivals aren't the ones who made the comparison, a member of romney's own staff is the one who did. the rivals jumped on it bcause the comparison that romney's own staff member made is in line with the main criticism of romney

buzzfeed and politico types meme-ified the hell out of it in a 12-hour period and now they're tired of it, even though it legitimately says something about how Romney approaches politics

Well, anyone who's tired of it might need to check out now, because it's going to be repeated until November 6.

yeah, pretty dumb to hold up the etch-a-sktch itself and turn it into a "lol he's a toy!" silly meme instead of focusing on the point of the quote (and while "stand on the rock of freedom/stands on the sands of etch-a-sketch is a sick burn, it doesn't touch on the critical statement), which is that romney has no innate political morality, and will say whatever he thinks will get him elected

I think he is going to keep it up for the general too, seems like all he can do is run a negative campaign.

Meanwhile Obama and Biden trot out the Osama Dead/GM alive line along with the other accomplishments and pushing the improving economy. The Liberal PACs will probably hit Romney and the GOP more negatively, but I think his (Romney's) campaign is going to be the more negative of the two right out of the gate and for a candidate that has already grown his unfavorable rating a lot I think he is never going to come close if people are sick of his/his PAC's attack ads by the end of September.

what's kind of fun is that Obama can run positive ads about Romney's success with health care.

you can't

run a country

based on a uniquely deep understanding

Did we already discuss Ron Paul on Leno saying having secret service protection during the campaign was a form of welfare?

Does that mean he would've have any if he became president?

I'm starting to think he's just running a joke on everyone, for the sake of dollars.

I thought Paul Waldman made a good point about this

If I told you that Ron Paul (remember him?) said that Secret Service protection for presidential candidates is "welfare" and he didn't need it, what would you think he meant? Why of course, you'd think he meant that the kind of protection the Secret Service provides is necessary, but sometimes a candidate has fallen on hard times and can't afford to pay for it themselves, so the government steps in to do it for them. And if Paul doesn't need it, it's because his campaign, unlike those of his rivals, is on sound financial footing. That's what you'd think he meant, right?

Well, no. You'd know that when Ron Paul says "welfare," what he means is "an undeserved government handout." Welfare was established as part of a safety net to insure that people in poverty wouldn't spiral into absolute destitution, but today not only has the program (now called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, or TANF) been slashed to the bone, we barely ever debate it at all, unless it's to discuss a Republican proposal to make it even harder and more humiliating to receive. Instead, the word "welfare" only comes up when someone wants to characterize a benefit as undeserved.

And liberals are nearly as guilty as conservatives. The only time they use the word is when they're talking about "corporate welfare," by which they mean not benefits to needy corporations, but undeserved handouts to corporations. Just one more conservative linguistic victory, and one that has become so ingrained everyone uses it without thinking.

Yeah, the Walsh thing is great. Really hoping she buries him on election night.

She was on the end of The Ed Show tonight, Walsh flipped out at some Q&A today, the video was good.

Anyway, I think she is my next non-Obama donation after Elizabeth Warren this year. I am being a bad Democrat by ignoring some of my local guys and giving cash to candidates I love in other states.

he can just hide behind a statement like "i personally believe in evolution but feel it is the duty of our schools to provide a well rounded education, and other ideas about the creation of the universe, the earth and mankind are a part of that education." hell he can even omit the personal belief part.
