This is an incredible @radiolab story about a blind seven-year-old boy named Joe Engressia Jr. (he later changes his name, but I won’t ruin it for you) who learned how to hack the phone system back in the 1950s, and soon became the “grandaddy” of what is now referred to as “phone phreaks.”

this story was the first radiolab story since lucy to actually make me tear up.

so good.

I'm gonna bring this up in here because a whole thread would bring out the worst in the board.

I think "truthers" are amongst the stupidest people out there but I do have a feeling that we were caught so off-guard on 9/11 that there was some damage control done to make the government look better. Nothing huge, because conspiracies would easily be found out. But I think there mayve been explosives in WTC9 and that the we mayve shot down United. Gov't being behind anything other than bringing down the plane is just ridiculous, though.

Edit: shit, obv meant wtc7. Drunk and phone boarding

Obviously, I'm not a firm believer in either of those things. Just the hypothesis that I'm operating under. Again, I really dislike the outlandish belief that the government was behind anything or that the planes were equipped with bombs, etc.

Whatever, here's the Myrtle Plantation:

Visited when I was a kid and wasn't convinced but my Grandmother's friend spent the night and awoke to find her stuff strewn about the room.

i'm on like page 31 of this thread and have been reading it for the last three and a half hours. some really cool stuff, glad it got bumped. did grammatron ever find out what was the deal with that dude who claimed to be someone he knew? also, the story about the guys running at the boarder's friend's car waving pieces of paper was fucking awesome.

edit: to contribute a little bit, the younger sister of one of my best friends claims to see ghosts. i have only had a chance to talk to her about it for half an hour, but she seems like a really level-headed and smart kid, who doesn't seem the type to just make shit up. apparently, she has been freaked out for a long time. when i asked her to describe the way the ghosts looked, she said they basically just looked like everyday people. the last time i saw her, she'd just gotten back from a school trip in a national park and she said she saw ghosts, quote, 'lying in the streams'. she hates to be in the house by herself and apparently prefers to sleep in the same room as her mum on most nights. according to my friend, there used to be a morgue below her house. my friend's sister is apparently unaware of this.

something to think about, anyway.

on the subject of unsolved disappearances, what does everyone think about maddy mccann?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Madeleine_McCann

was at a party the other night where people were talking about this, some guy was insisting that the parents know more than they are/were letting on, but i think it's pretty unrealistic to believe that at this stage right? esp. with the sightings of a guy carrying a child, etc.

Yeah, turned out it was me, I was just fucking with him

No, j/k, it was probably some guy from God-knows-where who had been stalking him for a couple years and was/is preparing to murder and subsequently become him

Yeah that Maddy McCann thing is legit creepy. The most eerie of the alleged sightings is the one where she tells the shopkeeper that she was with a stranger who took her from her mommy. I don't know if being obsessed w missing children/later sightings is a good thing when I have a daughter and all.
This is a great cd, it is fun and enjoyable to listen to. the best songs on this cd are all of them. If you have not listened to this cd then i recommend you do

those are probably my two favorite stories from the thread, especially the dudes in the suits at the church. if you know what page these are on, you should bump them for folks that have come late to the thread.

SO around last thanksgiving my friends and i had a spooOOOOOoky night where we went to see paranormal activity and then visited this crazy urban legend spot outside ann arbor called 'scary road,' which is basically just an old abandoned gas station and a bunch of abandoned cars out in the middle of nowhere in the fucking woods. it's pretty scary, indeed. ON THE WAY to scary road, a guy who we became friends with in college told us this story that happened to him in high school. and it's probably the most inexplicable, creepiest thing i've ever heard happening to someone i know well.

so when he was like 17, around 3 in the morning, my buddy mike was hooking up with this chick in his car in the parking lot of this big church by where we live (a suburb outside detroit). he's all the way in the back of the parking lot and there are no lights or anything so he thinks he's pretty well hidden. all of a sudden, the girl says, 'who's that?' and he looks up to see a dude in a suit running towards his car from the direction of the church, waving a sheet of paper. a few seconds later and there are like 5 dudes, all in suits and sort of in the shadows of the parking lot, sprinting towards him all waving a single sheet of paper frantically at him. at this point he's getting a little freaked out so he jumps back into the driver seat and gets ready to bolt. at this point there's two flashes of light in front of him, and they're the headlights of two cars that are coming from both sides of him, trying to box him in. he hadn't even noticed the cars in the first place, had no idea where they were / when they got there, but as soon as the lights are on he punches it and manages to squeeze between these two cars, perpendicular to his and moving towards eachother, with literally, he said, inches to spare on either side. right beyond the cars one of the suited guys had made his way within like 10 feet and really frantically waved the piece of paper at him and grabbed at his door, but mike just sped past and the guy just sort of wacked his window. at this point, he said, there were no less than 10 dudes all in identical suits, at varying distances between his car and the church, running around the parking lot, all with a single sheet of paper that they were waving at him. so he and the chick are freaking out at this very weird situation, and he just guns it out of the parking lot. in his rearview he sees one of the two cars that had tried to box him in screech out after him. at this point he's speeding away and the car is in hot pursuit after him. he comes to a red light and decides to just blow past it, so he goes through but the car following him stops and waits. he pulls into a driveway and cuts his lights and sees the car drive past a few minutes later.

MYESTERY! unsolved.
