my gf is vegetarian, as are two of my best friends. generally i think the food they make is delicious. none of them really go for the fake meat in a big way. these days i probably only eat meat once or twice a week, and it's almost always when i'm drunk/lazy and go to some fast food place. i have a little bit more trouble with the political/ethical side of vegetarianism, in part because i grew up on a farm and don't really have a problem knowing that an animal has died so that i can eat it-- as long as it hasn't died in a horrible way, i don't mind. but i think there's something terribly messed up about the way society consumes meat in general-- a lot of the time, it seems like it's cut off from the source. when you go to the supermarket and browse the meat section, it's easy to forget that it's actually pieces of dead animals. there is a disconnect and i think everybody should be aware of what it is they're eating. i admire people who can commit to something like vegetarianism and stick to it. a lot of the time i can't even buy free range eggs because i can't justify the extra cost. it must really suck to have people coming at you all the time about why/how you can be veggie, and i think this is how most people end up militant about it. but i don't really know enough to have a serious discussion about the politics/ethics of vegetarianism, so generally i try to stay out of it.
basically i had some wicked courgette fritters yesterday, it was awesome
