about a year ago me and the gf had a momentous discussion in which we both revealed that we were pretty much happy with having indian food 4-5 times a week, and it's been a massive, massive quality of life upgrade for us. infinite variety and flavor, and no more scrambling to figure out how to smuggle protein into a pasta dish on a wednesday night. it's kind of effortless if you invest in the right spices, have a rice cooker that does basmati well, and keep some frozen trader joe's naans and parathas on hand

I think eventually I might get rid of eating eggs, but I don't think I'll ever be able to give up dairy products.

I have never had Indian food, because neither the Sonic or Dairy Queen in my town offer it.

Yeah I was vegan for like 3 years but I am just vegetarian now. It's more of a Singer vegetarianism. I don't really buy milk and eggs directly but I don't go looking for ingredients anymore. I just could never drink milk again. It's just so gross. When I do buy eggs, it's from a farmer's market or Country Hen eggs. The big reason for the switch is cost. Being vegan made me get pretty creative with cooking so it wasn't hard except if I was going out to eat with friends. I still try to limit dairy products just because they are pretty awful for you. I don't eat meat mostly because of ethical and environmental issues. I don't eat fish just because of over-fishing and by-catch. I hate dumb elitist vegans who don't respect vegetarians. I also dislike when people say they hate tofu but they really just haven't learned to cook it. It took me forever to learn how to but it's like a staple now. I have being using a new recipe every time I buy groceries and that is working pretty well. If any boarders need help with any vegetarian stuff, I've helped out a lot of friends already.

I don't eat red meat unless someone else pays for it. Eggs are pretty fucking gross, same with milk/cheese. What kinda of vegetarian does that make me?

vegetarian for 17 years here. i eat eggs, drink milk on occasion, love cheese, greek yogurt everyday.

real important to push the beans, all your veggies, blah blah blah. you all know. i can't imagine (personally) being able to be vegan, ever. though i do want to eat meat again in some situations in the near future, as long as it's sustainably gotten, etc. i miss red meat soooo much.

eggs are the best

does anyone know what the general treatment is like for hens that produce the typical "cage free" eggs you'd find at safeway or wherever? I usually buy em because the cost isn't that much more, but I get the feeling the terminology is probably at least somewhat misleading. oh well better than nothing i suppose

they are still allowed to burn off the beaks of the chicks when they are cage free, free range implies that they are 'allowed' access to the outdoors (though they only need to do this 51% of the time). free range does not guarantee the quality of the area they are allowed to roam, or how large it is.

presumably when you're cooking Indian food at home you're not using assloads of clarified butter. And if you eat it every night you can probably resist the urge to stuff your face

My fiance is vegetarian born and raised and while I think I would like to go vegetarian I kind of worry that I would stick to eating a lot of dairy and bread and other carb heavy stuff too start which, with my metabolism, would just end up on my stomach. I feel like I would miss chicken and fish too much.

Yeah cage free hens can mean there is a window in the huge metal shit box thousands of chickens are crammed in. Country Hen doesnt debeak chicks and they actually are allowed to roam in these outdoor screened in areas. They gave tours before it was illegal to do so. I use to only be able to get them at one Publix but now they are at the Whole Foods

Been vegetarian for like 6 years and off again/on again vegetarian/vegan for a couple of years and think I've finally resolved to stay vegan and have been since NYE. I tried to make my own cheese out of nutritional yeast flakes and it really sucked.

So I didn't read the thread properly but did anyone mention any reasonable fake cheeses. I'm yet to try the toffutti mozarella block/tube whatever the fuck but I'm sure it probably sucks too. Any reports?

fake cheese is a travesty, everybody knows that.

I made this last night, an oldie from my vegetarian days, but with real chorizo. still good with the soy stuff (though it isn't necessarily better for you). Meat substitutes are weird. I know too many fat vegans.

Daiya is better than most of the other vegan cheeses Ive tried. The other ones were rubbery and didnt really melt right. Ive made a lot of grilled cheeses for nonvegans with Daiya and they never knew. They were just in shreds but they have just come out with new cheese wedges

this is a fantastic cookbook for vegetarians (also easily adaptable to incorporate meat, if you're into that). all monastic cooking, so the focus is on garden-fresh food and seasonal cooking.

Is there a good vegetarian cooking blog? I was going to buy a veg cookbook from a used store but then I realized I might be spending £3 on a book I'd never use when I could never use recipes from the internet for free.
