Videogames: The Official Thread

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Postby ifear » Mon Apr 02, 2012 4:53 pm

i did caveat it with the ranty developer bit, so there should be a degree of salt-pinch-taking anyway.

read another piece today about how the no-tail purchase model is killing off aa titles, which got me thinking:
- in the age of xbla/psn/etc is that even a loss?
- is there such a thing as a single-a title?
- who came up with this bullshit nomenclature?
hi there how are you i will be your hexahedron for today

define this "no-tail" purchase model and examples of AA titles (as opposed to AAA or A titles)

i guess we won't need to worry about these issues if the rumors come true and the new xbox and PS4 lock out used games

for most titles, 95% of sales occur in the first two weeks, which has a whole chicken/egg relationship to the games the high street shops will stock (i.e. top 25 and no backlist).

re: aa games, i don't know how you'd define it, but ones with non-trivial development costs that aren't expected to sell in the millions, i suppose. for context: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... -aa-titles

That looks fun as hell, and since the prequels have already ruined the franchise for me so why not.

i think there was a kill screen piece up recently that criticized the graphical overhaul of the game - to paraphrase, SH1 & 2 apparently have glitchy animation problems and the high-def removes a bit of the grainy-ness and mystery of the original titles. confirm/deny?

The highest kickstarter tiers for this game development paradigm should give people designer credits

they go in for an interview and depending on how smart/dumb they are they are given a infinitesimal-to-small part of the game to pseudo-design and paid min wage as a part time temp

I'd rather like, design a hack-spell and use it to pad my resume than have one of their guys come to a shadowrun pen and paper game and tell me what I can/cannot do

It's very grainy and extremely dark to me. I'm sure playing with your video settings you can adjust it to your preference.

just read about this
http://0x10c.com/
multi-player space game set in 281,474,976,712,644 AD. Besides the usual space battles, trading and mining we have come to expect from these kinds of games, 0x10c will also feature a fully functioning emulated 16 bit CPU that will control your spaceship and which will be fully programmable by the player.

As if having a programmable computer at the core of the game wasn’t enough, 0x10c has what must be one of gaming’s geekiest premises: the reason it is set in 281,474,976,712,644 AD is due to the simple fact that in 0x10c’s parallel universe, the space race never ended and that a computer bug in a new “deep sleep cell” introduced in 1988 caused a large number of people to sleep for 0×0001 0000 0000 0000 years instead of the planned 0×0000 0000 0000 0001 years.

apparently he's not going to stop players from making viruses for the ingame cpus, which is fun
i sort of resent minecraft but i don't deny that this guy is really smart and what little concept for this game that has come out is great
