how did you learn how to make this stuff?

got a basic electronics book (can't remember the name, but it's basically the premiere intro book and is hand-written. it's weird)

tinkered a bit. could make sound generators. hit a stopping point.

took a class at the community college.

kept reading.

It's not going to take you too far as a hobby, you'd need to specialize in it. I haven't played anything live in almost two years but I used to take this stuff live and it was generally reliable and usable. I've made one synth with keys (basically gutted a $5 goodwill casio).

I'm pretty ambitious about this stuff but I've been doing it for like 5 years and still am fairly limited. I also still won't play with higher voltages so I can't make anything really portable for fear of killing myself or starting a fire.

ok cool
yeah i've been thinking of taking a course here at night and picking up a book

or maybe starting with some of those stomp box pedal kits or something... i dunno.. i can solder but can barely read a circuit flow chart and have no concept about what really does what

Did you wind up signing up for that MIT EE course online?
I've been doing it starting basically from no electronics knowledge at all. It's basically all circuit analysis. So far resistor networks, dependent current/voltage source analysis, incremental characteristics for non-linear devices. Haven't gotten to capacitors yet.

I did sign up for it. Though it seems like it's not quite up to building anything there's a lot of background there I haven't actually gotten in a CC class, no surprise.

here's my weird little home setup - not as impressive as some of the stuff you guys are posting but it works - my so far small venture into modular is sitting on the desk

there's a rehearsal space too with more stuff

should really find a classier stand for the Voyager than an Ikea rack that i used to keep my socks and underwear in

yall have some nice synths on here.

i just went a little crazy and picked up a teenage engineering OP1 and a korg emx. i was debating between the dsi tetra and the op1 forever, but the op1 just looked way more fun.
hoping to use the emx w ableton and midi out for live sets.

yeah someone in the twin cities better be all over that. great price on the Juno.

I never played w a Radias but I feel like Korg is sneakily dropping a lot of underrated synths on the market and letting them fade. they could really blow shit up by basically just re-issuing the MS-20, 100% analog & contemporary components, at a decent price point.
I had been eyeing this Post O’alls Royal Traveler vest in “southern” chambray to wear year round here in the South. This will be my fourth Post O’alls piece and I have nothing but amazing things to say about what Takeshi is doing with Post.

the op1 is pretty cool so far, i need to get into it more. the price seemed over the top but after messing around with it i think its like a real achievement in design. i use ableton a lot but i would like to rely on hardware more.

yeah i love korg! the ms20 looks great. i think the monotribes have been really successful at least.

the radias appealed to me because it seemed like a fancier electribe. i got obsessed with it after watching a jexus demo video of it:

i also have a wave drum and a mircosampler, 2 other unpopular korgs that i got for really cheap/i think are fantastic.

Thanks for the link.
Generally speaking I try to avoid stuff that reminds me of Windows Media Player visuals.
I've been really digging the HSS3i, the visuals are simple, works well with the luminance key in the Edirol V4.

I was looking into buying this dude's DVD. Then I saw this Kickstarter to buy him an LZX and honestly fuck everything.

I would do anything for an analog video synthesizer from LZX,
but I won't do that.
No, I won't do that.

I kind of like the Windows Media Player visuals. Same with the korg kaoss entrancer, it has a kind of Much Music video dance party look to it.
the lzx looks amazing but also tooo expensive for me
Critter and Guitarri make a little video synth for $129 http://www.critterandguitari.com/products/video-scope

I think the best thing to do probably is buy max msp + jem for $300 or whatever and build my own
