you know, i guess i just figure when you get an education, get older, and maybe have some exposure to how hip hop culture affects kids, you have a different perspective on it. the white folks with the money love the grime, which is why there is no such thing as "enlightened" hip hop anymore -- it doesn't sell, and specifically doesn't sell to the white people who buy most of the albums. what sells is the "other", something foreign, exciting, dangerous... usually drugs, violence, sex. it's not like i'm the first dude to make this fucking argument. i view these little demented fuckers, and your reaction to them, as all part of the same spectacle, and it makes me a little bit ill, to be honest. i mean seriously -- the dude is probably sixteen, seventeen years old. and he's fucking freebasing on coke and cough medicine and singing about raping chicks. delightful. if you lived your lives the way these assholes live theirs you'd have a 1/100 chance of not being completely miserable by age 25. part of the reason that doesn't matter to you is because you're probably somewhat sheltered to begin with, but i'm sure it also has something to do with your inability to relate to the kids delivering the message. who gives a fuck about them anyway, right?
