my new neighborhood brewery just got their first beer advocate review:

Image
I was wearing a Far Side t-shirt when he came over. "I bet you didn't think I was the sort of person who wore t-shirts," I told him. (Our school had a dress code.) "I have three."

I could see how e-mailing the wrong person about sexy bathtime could be embarrassing.

I'm thinking about buying one too. Let me know how good it works. I'd like it for experimenting w/ ideas for home brewing.

was at my local shop last night and saw a sixer of Ballast Point Sculpin just chilling in the bottom row of the cooler. Pretty exciting development 8-)

drank the hemel and aarde bruichladdich barrel last night, liked it much better than the original
the peat plays really well with the malts, just a great stout

also the carbonation issues that plagued the original were totally nonexistent- excellent and appropriate level of carbonation in this version and none of this:

its a pretty decent beer, although it seriously is a bit oniony, but 14 bucks for 4 tallboys is quite steep

didnt get the oniony thing

not sure i can fuck with it too often at that price though

I'll be pouring my homebrew at the Maproom's fundraiser (Craft Day Afternoon) again this year...

May 19th at Fizz 1-5pm. This event kicks off Craft Beer Week in Chicago. Last year there was a ton of great beer/breweries. Probably the best bang for buck beer event during CBW. More details to follow...

Have a Bell's sampler case

Amber Ale
Pale Ale
Kalamazoo Stout
Porter (currently drinking)

We just about finished our case of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout which is 10% so it's a pretty big commitment when you start one (or when I start one, I guess). The case was about $40 which is fantastic for Philadelphia. I know our beer is pricier than everywhere else though.

someone should post a list of breweries to take note of and their best beers and/or some top lists by type of beer (maybe in the first post) cause last time i checked this thread it was around page 150 or so. at least for relatively accessible beers it'd be nice to have a list of things to try next time i pick up some stuff.

haven't been able to sell the piece i interviewed magee for yet, but i wanted to share a line from one of the rejections i got with this thread:

Beer is certainly the drink du jour and breweries are popping up all over the place.

I'm fucking bored and wanted to drink cheap garbage while I played Call of Duty with friends earlier, so here I am drinking a fucking Steel Reserve. I'll at least give my two cents about some breweries off the top of my head....

Hell, even new, quiet boarder Melba Toast will give her two cents. First response will be me, second will be her.

Dogfish Head: Sah'tea (Sahti), Olde School (Barleywine)
Founders: Both of us say Kentucky Breakfast Stout (Imperial Stout)
Bell's: Both of us say Hopslam (Double IPA, although I think no one should sleep on Java/Expo Stout!!)
Unibroue: La Fin du Monde (Tripel), Ephemere (Fruit Beer?)
Victory: Both of us say Golden Monkey (Tripel)
North Coast: Pranqster (Belgian Strong Ale), Old Rasputin (Imperial Stout)
Stone: Both of us say Old Guardian (Barleywine)
Three Floyds: Both of us would say Arctic Panzer Wolf (Double IPA), although we haven't had like...Zombie Dust or Dark Lord.
Southern Tier: Both of us say Gemini (Strong Ale/IPA?).

I didn't expect us to pick a lot of the same choices. I don't know that we can even think of any other breweries that we're well versed enough to make decent choices. Eh.

Anyone have a beatification around? Willing to trade for 6-pack of zombie dust.

Also, found this article on the Anheuser-Busch InBev purchase of Goose Island
http://chicagoist.com/2012/04/16/the_honk_heard_round_the_world_goos.php#photo-1
Pretty interesting read, but as a non-native Chicagoan, I've never really been all that attached to Goose beers, and I still have a healthy distrust of the big brewers. I understand the defense of "The beer is still the same," but at the same time, the Goose Island beers, especially 312 and the IPA and even their belgians, were never all that great. I'll pick up a BCS from time to time, but sometimes it just doesn't feel right to line the pockets of AB-InBev when I could be supporting someone else.

Maybe I'm being unreasonable about this. The fact that Goose has expanded so much means more people will enjoy Goose and perhaps find other craft beer as well. It does bring up an issue, however. If your favorite breweries (in my case, Firestone Walker, Russian River, Three Floyds and Deschutes) were going through the same thing, would you still buy their product? Maybe this is uninteresting, and I think about beer way too much. Fuck.

I always thought Goose Island IPA was totally fine for a beer I can get for 8.49/6-pack. That said, I probably haven't bought any since they were taken over.

It's a shame that they were bought by InBev but if the beer stays the same I'm still in. Bcs, Matilda, softie, pepe Nero, Xmas ale, night stalker are all great. It'd be nice to say fuck InBev but you're just screwing yourself

I only ever tried one Goose Island before they got bought out, I think. It sort of is a bummer to see big dudes buying up stuff, but I gotta imagine if anything, the distribution of shit would get potentially better. I dunno. I'm not NOT gonna drink a beer I like just because some big guy bought them, I guess.

Oh I've had Beatification before. I'm originally from NorCal. It's probably my favorite sour that they do along with supplication. It's just been a really long time, and my friends there are pretty unreliable douchebags that plan to go to Russian River, then get too drunk at some other bar in the early afternoon and realize no one can drive. Can't wait to head back there in May. Some of my favorite beers are the RR IPA and Porter, which are brewpub only. Hope you enjoy your bottles though.

One of these days I'm gonna have enough money to just fly over to the west coast and I'm gonna drink all the fucking Russian River I can get my hands on.
