i thought this too. my assumption was that she saw it as her only trump card, the only power she had in the situation, and she didn't want to reveal it right away for it to be dismissed immediately as a neat curiosity that bears no future threat because of their holders survival status. but on the other hands, they're dragons.

Everybody's afraid the baby dragons will die without Dany. Nobody else has any idea how to keep them alive.

Not that this is a universally persuasive argument, but it does hold sway in some quarters.

Yeah that has to be it.

I don't recall offhand (my knowledge of the Dany storyline is by far the fuzziest) but I really don't think that's how that encounter went down in the books.

I got all excited for more Greyjoy action when Pyke showed up in the credits, but :(

This might have been the best episode yet. Had fucking everything. Harrenhall was a bit more Maleficent's Keep-ish than I pictured, but was so awesomely holocausty and nightmarish. Of course a castle razed by dragons would look like that.

At that size it's pretty useless, so you can get the full size here: http://www.sermountaingoat.co.uk/map/index.php
or a direct link (recommend Right Click, Save As, since it's a 5mb file): http://www.sermountaingoat.co.uk/map/versions/speculative_map.jpg

Be aware that there could be some very minor spoilers if you read the text in the upper right, but after I read it, I didn't feel spoiled, and I'm usually pretty anal about stuff like that.
edit: OK, maybe a little spoiled. Don't read the last two paragraphs in the upper right if you want to avoid spoilers.

I didn't realize Vaes Dothrak was so far east. The title sequence makes it seem like it's just across the Narrow Sea.

how the hell did they get all the way to qarth?

Yeah it kinda seems like they would've had to wander across Lhazar first, which isn't the way I remember it. But the guy who drew that map nodoubt did more research than a quick readthough of the series followed by forgetting most of it.

I seem to remember in Season 1 they said that it took a month to travel from King's Landing to Winterfell, but then Ned was down in King's Landing in the next episode, so it's not too surprising that Dani crossed the Red Waste in 4 episodes.

Yeah, and the map on hbo.com is really similar to the one I posted, just not as detailed and more difficult to navigate.

Also, they did go to Lhazar, because that's where Mirri Maz Duur was from... the woman who "tried" to heal Drogo.

From the GoT Wiki:

"Khal Drogo's khalasar raids a Lhazareen village, robbing its treasures and raping its women, to Daenerys Targaryen's horror. She convinces Khal Drogo to exercise mercy, triggering a challenge to Drogo's leadership from another warrior, Mago, which he defeats with ease, though he takes a wound. Amongst the women of the village that Daenerys rescues is a maegi, Mirri Maz Duur. Grateful to Daenerys for her help, Duur agrees to treat Drogo's wound."

During the show, I kind of got the impression that they were heading west to the Narrow Sea in order to cross to Westeros, but it looks like they were actually going east to get more slaves and create a more powerful army... er... khalasar.

Not that this is a universally persuasive argument, but it does hold sway in some quarters.

the reverse of that is that i don't think anybody in that scene is really sure if a clutch of baby dragons is capable of killing 50 people standing around in robes and tunics, since they're starting to fade into legend by that point (i think the story is set 150+ years after the last dragon died). additionally, the symbiotic relationship between targaryens and dragons is one of the most enduring and public ideas about the creatures, so prematurely killing everybody and stealing the babies would be a bit like killing a nuclear scientist and taking his warhead without having any idea how it works

the only bad thing about this episode was the needless karth/quarth pronunciation punchline, which made no sense because dany had never seen the word written, had only heard it pronounced karth, and had said it that way herself earlier in the episode

that map is awesome, but sort of out of place in this thread (compressing the narrative for tv is going to inevitably compress the geography of the world)
