pop music relativism is so annoying too. if i had the choice between dancing to la roux's in for the kill or robyn's dancing on my own, i'm going to go with the song that doesn't make me feel like a hologram. or like phoenix somehow being indistinct from similar, much shittier bands. the formal details may be very similar, but in that space those band share, distinctions can be still made according to how well they pull it off. i've never listened to taylor swift, but i imagine she's pretty good at being an artist like taylor swift. sleigh bells are trying to be a rock band with big hooks everyone can live inside and it's okay to think they don't pull it off.

emo/mall punk stuff is still mainstream pop music and the reason why hipinion doesn't like 30 seconds to mars but will like a rihanna song is because 30 seconds to mars never gives you a chance to enjoy whatever hooks they wrote because you can't swallow this ridiculous fucking thing they're trying to sell you while rihanna is an r&b singer that is at the very least an r&b singer.

as for sleigh bells, i paid like $30 to go to their concert in tampa because fox was going and i figured it was at the very least a social activity where i could go out and have drinks with friends and check out hot girls. i'd never listened to them before and had no interest in disliking them, but i thought they completely sucked. power chords and attitude and leather jackets and fist-pumping anthems that failed to move me in any way. i just found their tunes empty and unsuccessful at generating any kind of enjoyable affective response. i felt completely alienated from the people around me who wanted to jump up and down and engage in a Rock N Roll experience.
