TWBB is a movie about making an audience feel love, hate, and fascination with a terrifyingly focused man (not to mention a caricature that's ludicrous now and then). You get to/have to be H. W. Plainview for a while, everything looks mythic, old, and vaguely scary, and you have to sit and witness your driven father evolve into an unhinged monster. Its industrial and economic concerns are set dressing for the straightforward task it sets itself.

Gangs of New York is an abject horror show, and his performance in that film is similarly outrageous, however it's believable and functions within the film. In TWBB it's just NOW MY VERBIAGE AND ACCENT ARE NOTE PERFECT AND I SHALL RECITE FOR YOU THESE LINES WITH THE TENACIOUS VERACITY NECESSARY TO INVOKE AN IMAGINARY PAST IN WHICH A PERSON LIKE ME COULD HAVE EXISTED AND SAID SUCH THINGS. You can't suspend disbelief but for a couple of nicely-flowed moments. Most are endlessly staged.
That said, the *opening* of the film is nothing short of phenomenal. And I adore the scene where he lights the earthquake oil on fire with his knave.
