In the heat of the battle, the guy from the Kingsguard thought it was the perfect opportunity to kill Tyrion without anybody noticing, so he tried, but was stopped by a guy sure to become Tyrion's new best friend. (He looked familiar, have we met him before?)

The "new best friend" was his squire. He helped serve during the dinner Tyrion had with Cersei and he was helping Tyrion put on his armor in the beginning of this episode.

I probably would've assumed he was alive if Ned hadn't died at this point in last year's season.

in the battle when they want someones head chopped in half, they clearly kniw how to do that as all sorts of people were getting their heads cut in half
that wound was obviously more superficial

to me the point of that scene was that he was down at the battles conclusion, so he didnt save the day
based on the previews from the next ep its pretty obvious all credit is going to tywin

Yeah, this is Lightbringer we're talking about. The red god blessed it himself, y'know. I really don't worry about the particular physics and anatomy questions when I'm watching a show like this. Just go with it and say to yourself, "Holy fuck, Stannis is a stone-cold badass."

It seems like this decision is going to cede a lot of territory to Robb.

First man up the ladder (without a helmet), hacking at people in front and behind him, and literally had to be dragged away kicking and screaming by his own men even when the battle was clearly lost. That's a hard core motherfucker.

And yet he lost to the three shook bitches Joff, Lancel, and The Hound (though at least Lancel took an actual wound before retreating).
