Finally listening to music in the car again

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Actually "Wendy" was on there. "Girls on the Beach" was an oversight though.

I like 20/20 a lot more than I remember. I think I had it confused with Friends.

I think we've covered "Disney Girls" adequately but I like "Tears in the Morning" almost as much.

Wild Honey: seemed mostly indifferent
-- "Darlin'": "Huh. Okay." (On being informed it was the single.)
-- "Here Comes the Night": "I can't hear what he's saying so I'm just going to pretend this is Charlie's 'Nightman' song."

Friends: did not like
-- "Be Here in the Mornin'": "Is the whole album like this?"

At this point she asked to skip ahead to Sunflower, but I wanted her to hear "Never Learn Not to Love" first for obvious reasons.

-- "Never Learn Not to Love": "That wasn't a bad song really. Some of the lyrics were kind of weird."

Then we were on the highway, so I asked her to switch to Sunflower. Instead she managed to put it on shuffle.

-- "Transcendental Meditation": "What the shit is this? ... I hate Mike Love so much. ... Is this my punishment for not knowing how to work your phone?" (A: "Yes.")

-- "The Nearest Faraway Place": "Yeah if you'd put this on an Air album you would totally have fooled me."

-- "Celebrate the News": "Why would you rip off 'Glass Onion'?"

-- "Be with Me": liked, I think

Sunflower: liked a lot
-- "Slip on Through": liked
-- "This Whole World": (Me: "This is one of my favorite songs of theirs. I feel like it's where he was supposed to go after Pet Sounds.") "Yeah this is a really good song."
-- "Add Some Music to Your Day": "This is probably a better song than I could write, but... Jesus, this is going on forever."
-- "Deirdre": (Me: "This was the first of three songs written by Bruce Johnston. I like them all a lot.") "You enjoy listening to this?" ("...it is sort of characteristically saccharine.") "You like saccharine... oh, right, the girl group."
-- "It's About Time": "That was almost something I would listen to myself." (A compliment, I think.)
-- "Tears in the Morning": laughed at "hope you love the baby I'm never gonna see"
-- "All I Wanna Do": (Me: "This is Brian again, as you might have guessed.") "Yeah." (Liked.)

Surf's Up: liked
-- "Take a Load Off Your Feet": "This song sucks."
-- "Disney Girls": every time we would start a new album she would ask if this was the one with "Disney Girls" on it. I don't think she actually said anything about it.
-- "Student Demonstration Time": "Jesus Christ. ... You just know he thought this was going to be a really important song."
-- "Lookin' at Tomorrow": "I like this one."
-- "A Day in the Life of a Tree": "Is this about... a tree? ... I'm trying to ignore the lyrics."
-- "'Til I Die": liked
-- "Surf's Up": "That was a really good song."

I like to think Al Jardine saw that cover and thought, "Shit, I'm an idiot."

You should play her Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle at some point. Makes a nice follow up to Surf's Up.

Seriously though how do you give an album that cover and put on it a novelty song called "Take a Load Off Your Feet."

Transcendental Meditation is one of the funniest things that ever happened. Charles Manson writing a song for the Beach Boys and it not even being one of their more insane songs is also up there.

When I was coming back from New York on the bus I had a freeware mixing program going with two copies of All I Wanna Do playing at 66% speed like a second apart from each other and I just left them looping for like two hours.

Because Jardine and Mike Love are cocksucking assholes, more or less.

Honestly though you could have an album that was just "Surf's Up" and 9 Pomplamoose songs and it would still be worthy of that cover.
Kevin Shields doesn't make albums for teenage boys listening to brickwalled 128 mp3s on logitech speakers. He's an artist making glorious sounds to be appreciated in hifi. You have a volume knob don't you? Turn it up, cretin.

was tempted to make this a lot slower and include repeats so it'd go on forever but decided to dial it back to something more accessible.

Here is the Dennis Wilson song they took off to make room for "Take a Load Off Your Feet":

On to Badfinger.

Magic Christian Music: "inoffensive"
-- "Come and Get It": "I guess a song written by Paul McCartney isn't the worst gift you could give a band." (Me: "It is a very Paul McCartney kind of gift though.")
-- "Give It a Try": "All of these songs are so depressing now that you've told me their story."
-- "Maybe Tomorrow": liked

No Dice:
-- "I Don't Mind": "This is a pretty Beatles-y song." (Me: "Wait for the next one.")
-- "Love Me Do": "This just sounds like a gimmick song...like, on top of the name."
-- "Without You": "Yeah, I've heard this one a bunch. ... God, these poor guys."
-- "Blodwyn": "'Take this spoon'?"
