creativity is being able to be 93 years old and dealing with your spouse passing on at 76 and having your kids and grandchildren that love you surrounding you and taking care of you and having the life skills to carry down the blood

murray street don't be retarded they're one of the biggest bands pitchfork covers and they had unique personal access to them during a period of strife that is newsworthy to fans of the group and quite possibly of interest to people who are fans of music in general, if you don't understand why they would publish that article i mean why would they ever publish anything

i should have clarified that there, to me, isn't a perceptible editorial motivation for going so in-depth into it, or any kind of message behind the story. it's obviously newsworthy and they're a big band but if they only wanted to get out the message that this guy is troubled and it affects the band they could have just written up a 500-word news story, which they already did.

instead of publishing a florid account of this guy's bipolar disorder and suicidal tendencies bafflingly accompanied by, like you wrote on tumblr, a bunch of glamour shots of him and the band.

i mean fuck it literally is their job to get a bunch of links and ad revenue based on shit like this so i really am being retarded, congrats to them i guess.

like is it really that stupid to want music journalism to contribute something more to the conversation than typical 1970s style tortured genius bullshit with a pat obligatory "it's okay for people to talk about their mental illness and get help" pull quote?

i'm willing to let the answer to that question be "yes".

my original post was pleading ignorance instead of just flat out saying that i think the article is ridiculous which everyone has already agreed on so i'm really just making things difficult on myself here

i could tell more engaging stories about selling purple gummi dinosaurs from mr bulkys for 25 cents on the bus on the way to middle school that would be more relevant than talking about suicide to the same demographic they are trying to cater to

That's completely absurd. You guys are fucking bricked. That has to be one of the most bias-free, resonant pieces of writing about legitimate mental illness I've ever read.

The guy talks in neutral color terms about the music and even directly alludes to the fact that almost everyone involved in tranche-level music hates this band more than any other. And the guy in the band knows it, it's one of the reasons he's having such trouble. You want to be Radiohead, then you think you can settle for Phoenix, then you realize you're the white Pretty Ricky.

Yes. The piece was expert, one of those 5-6 things a year they run where I'm like "huh maybe this entire enterprise isn't a total waste of brainpower after all."
Kevin Shields doesn't make albums for teenage boys listening to brickwalled 128 mp3s on logitech speakers. He's an artist making glorious sounds to be appreciated in hifi. You have a volume knob don't you? Turn it up, cretin.
