I think I might be prejudiced against the US south

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Postby waldojeffers1 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 1:42 am

well I'm partly taking things further than I usually would just because it's my boarding style. trolling I guess.

I don't act any different around my friends who are from the south, but I didn't meet any of them in a southern context, so I don't know.

sordid affair wrote:i feel like there's often an assumption that identifying with a place (whether it's a region or a country, maybe not as dangerous when it's a city) is inherently defensive or apologetic or backwards

this is my thing: unless you want to declare yourself fully and uncompromisingly a Citizen of the World (which i'm not denying as a possibility), you are from a place, and that place probably has both wonderful and terrible tendencies

but being "from a place" means dealing with all of that

I agree with this stuff, but I just never feel from a proper place within the US. I just feel that place is less specific than people think sometimes. I guess I feel sort of aligned to anabaptists because there are some metaphysical stuff I've heard my mom espouse that I don't see coming from many other places but that is about it

Where are you from originally?

Coming from an urban, East Coast environment that revolves pretty strongly around historical ethnic neighborhoods, I have real serious sense of place, an extremely limiting one in a lot of ways, a neighborhood-level (almost street-level) identity that is at once a source of pride and a claustrophobic psychological burden.

my parents are ohioans but I grew up in miami FL
then I moved to delaware after and then went to Ohio State for school.

I mean it makes sense as to why I don't feel from a particular place,

Steve Smith, a white nationalist with a violent past, was elected to the Republican Party committee for a county in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Smith, who is listed as the state chairman of the white nationalist group American Third Position, proudly shared a photo of the certificate commemorating his election on the website, White World News.

Several commenters on the site congratulated him.

CONGRATULATIONS, SIR! This may seem like just a small step now, but this is how we are taking our nation back and it's how we will secure a future for our people. Everyone needs to look to Steve's example. He's a true patriot!

The Southern Poverty Law Center said that Smith was a member of the Aryan Nations and a skinhead group known as Keystone United. In 2003, Smith and two other skinheads were arrested for shouting slurs and throwing a brick at a black man from Scranton, PA. He pleaded guilty to making terrorist threats and ethnic intimidation and received a 60-day sentence.

In 2010, Smith attended a school board in Wilkes-Barre and objected to a call to hire more minority teachers, saying that the proposal was anti-white. "Diversity is not a strength," Smith said.

He also had a letter to the editor published in the local newspaper last November in which he defended the racial profiling of blacks. "Whites need to stop walking on eggshells when it comes to the issue of race and crime," he wrote. "We need to stand up and speak out against what is happening to our once-safe communities."

Wilkes Barre is a sizable city of around 50,000. It's pretty close to my hometown. I'm blown away by this. I guess I surround myself with they type of people who frequent our board and just have no clue this is going on.

A girlfriend in college was from a wealthy family in Greenwich and they seemed like pretty decent people, but when I showed up they were not only appalled, they were out and out nasty to me. Her grandparents were wonderful to me and her parents made a really nice attempt to be decent, but her brothers, who all went to good schools were very snide and just made it super uncomfortable for me. Talking about hipsters voting for Obama and I was so progressive I probably owned a 'colored' television and just really shitty and patronizing.
