don't misunderstand : it's great. it's just that I think i would probably have liked it more if each story had not been split in two.

I'm slowly reading Colin MacCabe's Godard: A Portrait of the Artist at 70. It's fun, though it mostly reads like a list of Godard's relationships mixed with a memoir of MacCabe's career.

man, 'a personal matter' is one of the most crushing books i've ever read. great though. i also highly recommend 'the silent cry'

about finished with savage detectives and the source family biography. also started 'haiku' by andrew vachss.

Barbara: Great as it is, it's tough for me to see "Ghostwritten" (other than the Mongolia story/chapter) as anything other than the threshing out of techniques that he puts to better use in "Cloud Atlas." If some of the gimmickier devices are interrupting the flow for you, maybe check out "Black Swan Green," which is similarly great and more cohesive, if less ambitious.
