I'm surprised by all the love for The Devil's Candy. I found it really middling and frustrating. The tension of the film felt hollow to me.

That's how I felt too, thought it was aggressively mediocre. I haven't seen it in awhile though so I was gonna try and watch it again at some point. I love The Loved Ones though.

My favorites are Tenebre, Opera, and Deep Red. Especially Tenebre.

5. Flatliners (1990)
Image
This was a cool initial premise but totally nosedives in the execution. The “afterlife” and consequenses thereof are totally at random, make no sense, and end up just being weird and boring, the whole thing just winds up as an uneven, lofty morality tale. The cast really goes for it (Kiefer and Bacon especially), but the characters and dialog are completely two dimensional, the movie looks good and has kind of a fun vibe and pacing, but even through all of the “intensity” of the induced death scenes, you never really feel like there are any stakes until the end, and even then

6. Beyond The Gates (2016)
Image
This was bad on like every conceivable level, and not in a good way. Like I knew coming in that it probably wouldn’t be very good, but man what a waste. The main protagonist who I guess you’re supposed to like and relate to is like a black hole of charisma and one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen, to the extent that I looked it up afterwards cause I assumed this was something he also wrote and directed as a vanity project (aparently he was in some other low budget horror I haven’t seen). This is another case of something that’s a really fun concept (old video tape board games!) just completely put to waste. It blows my mind that this has gotten generally good reviews on most movie sites. Feel especially bad for Brea Grant that her career has led to being sucked into this mess

7. Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
Image
What the fuck was this movie? Like I knew going in that this was the Jason brain slug movie that’s the black sheep of the franchise and barely has any actual Jason, but wow. I don’t totally hate the premise of the body transfering stuff, I think they could have probably made it work and weaved it into some of the other movies to make it make more sense in the chronology and retcon some of the low points and inconsistencies of other movies, but nope, just a bunch of fucked up shit. This movie is a mess, but it’s kind of a spectacular mess, for what it was, I kind of dug it

Deep Red, if you want the pinnacle of his giallo work

Inferno if you want Suspiria down the rabbit hole

Phenomena if you want to see bugs ejaculate on Jennifer Connelly

lol god i love jennifer tilley.

fiona dourif really has some acting talent, hope to see her in something other than this franchise. i thought this was all around good fun, don mancini hopping back and forth over that line of seriousness and self-mockery.

Oct 6 - HELP ME...I'M POSSESSED aka THE POSSESSED (1976)

Image
Image

A woman is drawn into the demented halls of a sanitarium run by a mad doctor.

Preposterous 75 minute romp through a m̶i̶n̶i̶ ̶g̶o̶l̶f̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶r̶s̶e̶ castle asylum run by the sadistic Dr. Blackwood. And you know it's a real sanitarium because they have a Charles Manson lookalike (named Charlie) locked up in the basement. He gets to watch the doctor stuff women into snake coffins and decapitate what I believe was a white man in Mexicanface. There are also many murders done by what appears to be red silly string floating in a void. It runs out of steam 2/3 of the way through (again), is extra horrible toward women, and has no plot...but it's the kind of genuine Grade-Z nutso garbage I love. B+

Trucks come to life and begin terrorizing a small rest stop in the Texas desert.

Hoppin on the recent King convoy with this USA Channel entry that sadly didn't make Poptone's list. It's basically a slightly more competent made for TV Maximum Overdrive, but just solely with killer trucks. There's still some pretty whacked out stuff in this including one of the silliest kills I've seen on film a truck with a cleanup crew enters into crazed truck territory, the cleanup truck becomes evil, manages to turn on a air pump in the back, pumps up an empty hazmat suit, and then has the puffed up hazmat suit pick up an axe and hack apart the cleanup crew. truly incredible stuffToggle Spoiler. Probably liked this a little more than Maximum Overdrive though that's not a high bar to clear. C-

Upon reflection Maximum Overdrive probably is slightly better than Trucks, I'm just cutting Trucks a lot of slack because it's a TV movie with much smaller budget and no reputation (which I know I shouldn't do). At the end of the day they both have the same highs (a fun premise, ridiculous kills) and lows (movie is mostly people puttering around in a diner, shots of trucks just drifting around gets tired after awhile). Overdrive wins out because of the AC/DC soundtrack and the ending which I really wish was on youtube.

The survivors are pursued to the docks by the Green Goblin truck - which manages to kill one more trucker after he steals a large diamond ring from a female corpse in a car (Marla Maples) - before Robinson destroys the truck once and for all with a direct hit from an M72 LAW rocket shot. The survivors then sail off to safety; a title card epilogue explains that two days after the machines' rampage, a UFO was destroyed by a Soviet "weather satellite" conveniently equipped with class IV nuclear missiles and a laser cannon.
