I know the board already rides hard for Messiah of Evil, but I watched it for the first time this weekend and holy moly what a gorgeous and interesting film. Aside from the ending which felt a little cheap/incomplete, this is an immediate all-timer.

Hooptober

#7 Alucarda (Moctezuma, 1977)

Didn't find this as immediately affecting as I would have expected after reading about it for years, but it has lingered with me a bit since watching it last night. It escalates pretty quickly and runs through to batshit crazy right up to the end.

I started at the tail end of August, so a little less than two months ago.

i like alucarda a lot. it has this atmosphere of evil that i appreciate. it may be the most satanic movie i've seen.

Moctezuma made another interesting movie called Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon which is def worth watching. He was an acolyte of Jodorowski, possibly even Jodo's cinematographer or something maybe? not gonna google it. but you can really see the Jodo influence on the Dr. Tarr movie in a big way. kind of has to be seen if you've an interest in acid psych horror.

it's on youtube, knew it would be

^ thanks for that. There's an interview with Del Toro on the DVD in the bonus features that speaks to some of that history. I'll definitely check out more of his work.

hey horror people, I feel like i've been in a slump for a long time. I'm desperately looking for something really disturbing that I haven't seen...I don't want new school jump scare, torture porn, or zombie movies with a message, and as much I love schlocky stuff my ceiling for it has been reached lately...I watched pumpkinhead while slackjawed last night, didn't move the needle for me..help me...

preferably made in the past 3 years

went and saw a double feature of creepshow / creepshow 2 last night

hadn't seen creepshow 2 before and hoo boy it's not great. but it did provide some unintentional laughter. also the long haired kid in the first segment was definitely in redface :(
seriously.

have you watched either of Oz Perkins' films? I'd say Blackcoat's Daughter is the more *frightening* of the two, but I Am the Pretty Thing... is gorgeous slow-burn atmospheric stuff.

both seasons of Masters of Horror are up in the db. probably should have put them in Spooky Flix but they're just in TV.

A group of young thieves agree to spend one night in an unholy tomb to win a bet for treasure.

Some nogoodnik teens trash their airbrushed van and find a bar underneath the ancient graveyard they chose to sleep in. From there it's a very cliche creep through cobweb corridors after they take the barkeeps bet and try to win about 2000 years worth of Night Templar money that's been building up like those progressive slot machines. It's pretty tame stuff (did not realize this was a TV movie) with some real silly moments like the family dinner for deformed corpses. There is a nice feeling of progression through the whole thing, even though they're going around pretty samey sets I enjoyed that things were always moving. There's sort of a King's Field vibe to this movie, but with diluted Italian cheesiness running through it.C+

i tried to watch Toad Road before and couldn't get past like 20 minutes of drugs and dicks. does it actually become a horror movie at some point or is it just like a harmony korine movie with a touch of horror?

I like Felt more than Toad Road, need to rewatch Toad Road though.
Really I'd say watch Raw over any of those.

it really didn't work for me on the level of a horror movie, but i guess i stopped looking for that after a while and just kind of rolled with it. it definitely gets unsettling when they start tripping out in the woods, etc "harmony korine with a touch of horror" sums it up pretty well.

Someone on FB was asking for everyone's Top 5 horror movies. Not an answerable question but after thinking about it for awhile I'd say (in no order)

The Vanishing
Bride of Frankenstein
Hausu
The Shining
?????? (idk, Sleepaway Camp... Possession?)

Raw is the kind of movie where 99% of shit wouldn't have happened if characters just talked to each other. It sucks.

did people hate starry eyes? i rewatched it last night for the first time in a while and dug it - it's nothing profound or scary but it's fun and gross.
