Yeah that's where I landed eventually, but was thrown off because nearly all of my regular non-owner bartenders I talked to were against the bill which seemed really weird to me. Then I realized a) I'd only talked to dudes just due to how the bars I go to are staffed currently, and b) these were all at fairly-established local places where the owners are actually decent people. So not the people that really need this initiative, and probably wouldn't really be affected by it anyway.

i don't think it's just dudes, the opposition seems pretty widespread and diverse in the industry from what i've heard. but otherwise yeah i feel this.

re: 77, it is honestly unclear to me:

1) how widespread the opposition is in "the industry" vs. opposition at the kinds of places that my friends work at and that i can afford to go to. the CIty Paper says they asked el tiempo for help with this and most latinx workers they spoke to were also No votes, but that's hardly a broad swath of opinion.

2) how many tipped workers outside of the restaurant industry will be affected: valets. housekeepers. nail salon workers. the coverage, understandably but to a fault, has focused on restaurants. like i don't think i've read a single quote from a housekeeper or a salon worker in this entire discussion.

i don't remember whether i said it ITT or in the dc thread but while i do think Yes is the obvious right vote -- it will raise wages, and a more socially just city is one that emphasizes paying a fair wage to all over the sustained success of every restaurant in every gentrifying neighborhood -- 77 is not the way you'd design it in a policy vacuum: you'd design something more universal, a broader safety net, something that looks suspiciously like socialism. i think well-meaning people on the no side understand that this is incrementalist in a way that disproportionately affects them, and that's part of the frustration. (many -- most? -- of the No side would not support those policies, either, but i suspect some would.)

77 is, however, the politically astute way to do this. minimum wage laws are very very popular.

it is very very clearly the right thing to do.

and if you're ever wavering just remember that being on the side of the national restaurant association is an extremely good heuristic that you're straight-up fucking wrong

Oh it's definitely not just dudes against 77, but one of the selling points of it is that workers won't be as beholden to dealing with gross harassment in the name of making enough tips to live, which isn't as salient a benefit for the guys I talked to.

But yeah like lb said, I think one of my main problems with it was that it wasn't ideal policy and it just felt rushed/weird, but once I considered the wide swath of workers it'd impact and my general distrust for business owners it makes sense to vote for 77 to pass.

I'm interested to watch how restaurants react to this, namely how many of them try to immediately raise prices on things and blaming the passage of 77. Basically a good scumbag litmus test.
