fyi i agree with almost all of the above, probably more than i wish i did. and this probably isn't the best place to expand on all my ideas because i'm increasingly disillusioned with any electoral politics.

no, in the broad scheme of things the dress doesn't matter but i think the police actions in front of the gala are being used to suppress the way in which these things will change, if they even can (direct action, separate from electoral politics, straight from the people). and if the dress move is pissing off pretty much every on the ground activist i personally know in nyc, then it is indicative of a really problematic tendency. I mean this is exactly it:

"The concept of "allowing her" to do anything makes no sense in the context of American electoral parties, in which officials are insanely insulated from any kind of democratic accountability"

this is true and exactly what must change. I think it's a miracle we even have someone like AOC in US politics but i think the aesthetic protests completely backfire. The right wing sees hypocrisy, the left wing sees someone increasingly out of touch with their actual needs and desires, and the liberal/progressive crowd are given something to cheer on that doesn't materially change anything. I know none of this is new but the fact that most people talking about the dress aren't even aware of the protest that happened is, to me, an indicator that aesthetic protest by our politicians is working to keep people home that might otherwise be involved.

:):) i mean i am a very long time lurker so i really do think we agree in this sense

and it is a bridge that does in some way need to be crossed, idk how. people need to hold the politicians that provide the best hopes for change accountable without everyone tearing each other apart ha (don't ask me how exactly)

When I was in congress wearing a tax dress handling the heat
Like look at how I got this, look how I got this
Just critiquing the street
Down at the Men in Business Conference
Such a scene

Yeah probably, right? We have self proclaimed socialists in congress, massive swaths of young people when polled express that they hate capitalism, occupy and black lives matter have totally reshaped American political discourse, a socialist (arguable I know) mounted an ultimately unsuccessful but nonetheless historic presidential campaign, indigenous activism is at a remarkable high point

The prominence of the Squad has had the opposite effect IMO - the most powerful 'the left' has been in the US in generations and we have President Joe Manchin and a $7.25 minimum wage (and outside of the US, Labour is even worse, the SPD in Germany would rather have a coalition with the right than include Die Linke, climate apocalypse is accelerating, etc.). Having a couple of token famous leftists like Bernie and AOC while single-payer healthcare gets less likely rather than more...

It's at best a 50/50 chance that the GOP House in January 2025 certifies Biden even if he's swept to victory with a +15% landslide.

It's a profoundly and impressively shitty and stupid moment too and everything is too little too late but it seems like whether or not this is convertible into hope capitalist hegemony has more holes in it than it did during the late Bush years or whatever

Wait I mean they haven't achieved massive legislative success yet but I don't see how that means they're actively detrimental

The ultimate fate of the corbyn insurgency is deeply tragic to be sure and I don't know about Germany but I'm sure it sucks too

Maybe replace hopeful with volatile but the point stands that I think a lot more people see capitalism not as the eternal framework of contemporary society but as something which may be piloted away from, even if in the direction of some barbaric neo feudalism or whatever the fuck. and that that specifically marks a departure from the capitalist realist thesis

We're pretty far afield from the dress at this point and i suppose at this point I'm just expressing my personal affective experience of a political mood and of the prospect of actual economic change which is the marshmallow fluff of political discussions so I'm probably going to clock out here but I don't disagree that shit really does suck still in spite of whatever symbolic interventions have slightly pried open the """"Overton window"""" or whatever
