im guessing theres a ~bigger picture~ to what's going on and everything will click when that shoe drops but i kinda hate this season. it just feels pointless i guess. im sure Schur has things mapped out and im just a forking idiot but i dont know this season just feels kind of phoned in and off. like im just waiting for things to get interesting and funny.

i need more janet!

yeah i feel the same way

i liked that the show was able to pull off a big reversal earlier on. i feel like lotsa tv shows try to do that but the result is always a boring show with a boring telegraphed twist, and this one was actually a good show that became a different good show after a good twist!

but now it’s feeling more like other shows, like it’s constantly trying to pivot to the next big change-up. and i’m just tired and i don’t care about the calvinball plot or whether these characters make up with the caricatures in their lives so where’s the friggin fun

still wowed by their apparent special effects budget though. wow!

yeah and also the show now feels closer to a broadcast comedy this season than something more elevated than that.

the second one of the recent episodes ended with a cliffhanger that was like, "oh no your mother is actually alive and we have to go visit her!" I was all, "can we maybe not, though? because I don't freaking give a hell"

yeah this season was a misstep, too much treading water, having to rebuild the relationships they've spent two years establishing, criminally underusing janet, and no derek.

yeah. i sorta think that has something to do with the characters being flattened out. so much of every episode is devoted to some kind of plotting it feels like the main characters’ only real contribution is to throw out some Classic Eleanor/Chidi/yadda yadda quip once in a while as, like, a justification for why they’re even on-screen. like everyone’s gotten a little flanderized because there just isn’t time for anyone to be interesting in the show right now

i hope it finds its footing again but i feel like if they’re scraping the barrel now i dunno why they wouldn’t be later. unless they have some crazy payoff or something

'flanderized' is a v. good way of putting it because if I have to watch tahani throw food/break stuff/be destructive at a party/gala/fashion show/otherwise uptight function one more time, or if I have to watch chidi have a panic attack when trying to choose between muffin flavor or whatever, I'm going to have to do a long hard post about this show

I mean realistically I knwo that "chidi the indecisive person" isn't going away anytime soon as a source of inner/outward conflict, but christ, I feel like they initially landed on that as a character trait in order to justify some goofy stuff in the first season and now it's baked into his motivations so thoroughly that dominates everything about Chidi as a concept

yeah my official guess is that they all die in an attempt to leave the real world and that due to a change in attitude eleanor +/- another main character other than chidi actually get to the good place and then it becomes about reunited chidi and eleanor next season

strongly agree that the show feels more traditional and forced this year. it's lost its best quality, the feeling that you think it can go anywhere and you trust it.

OMG Lil Sebastian was in the bad place in the background of the last episode. Guess he didn't trade his legs for angel's wings.

And I agree with the criticism. This is easily still the best network comedy, but this season is a big step down and doesn't feel as much like something that should be on a better platform.

shocking that being off earth and focusing on janet leads to the best ep of the season. at least now they're all dead and the writers shouldn't have much reason to want to ever go back to earth.

I really liked this one.

Also: it seemed that almost the entirety of the idea behind the moral framework of the show, something that seems like the overall framework of the show was somewhat firmly established, which... seems like a decent amount to have happened?
