is it possible that my mother went to grateful dead shows and never smoked or drank because i always had trouble reconciling her being a deadhead with her also being clean as a whistle

well sorry guy i didnt mean to offend and honestly the question was more about my mother than it was about this band
i still cant figure how you can go your entire adult life and never once listen to a single song by the band you used to follow around when you were younger
its just something where nothing has ever added up quite right

i think the deeper issue you need to resolve is reconciling the fact that your mother liked the grateful dead

I've been a huge Dead Head for years. Seen 20+ shows and was in the parking lot for a handful more in 93-94. Saw the 7/9/95 show in Chicago (with that incredible So Many Roads). I had over 600 cassette tapes at one time and currently have about 60GB on my hard drive. That said, I'm a libertarian that tends to vote independent or republican, rarely do drugs (it's been years since I've smoked pot) and am generally miserable when put in a situation where I need to try and carry out a conversation with a hippie.

Also, I tend to think that Stella Blue might be one of the greatest songs ever written. In places, It's so incredibly fragile sounding that you almost feel like it could slip off a shelf and break.

not a huge dead fan, but my favorite dead memory was when i was in granada and staying at this hostel named terrapin station, run by two hippies from california. dudes generously smoked me retarded with hash and then played "so many roads" from 7/9/95 - such a sad, epic version

edit: actually i just realized i'm talking about the same version of smr as trashboy, damn, been rekindling that memory with the wrong version for two years. big ups

I've never made much an attempt with the dead. That is probably due to the zeal that some dead fans push them onto you if you express any interest (a turn off) and also in part to sheer expanse of a catalog (if you include the live shows - which everyone does).

I own Workman's Dead and American Beauty and really enjoy both of them though. Also I think I could enjoy more but I'm not ready to dive into live shows or 25 min jams.

So who can give me some next steps?
