This JS is moderately ripping tbh! I wonder if blacksugar was at this show
I was at that show. we were rolling at this point, having done three in vegas, three in seattle and now were in portland, which was our home state. neither portland show was very memorable. in fact the only part I really remember is how awful chuck berry was as an opener, but part of that was because the venue had terrible sound
just saw a dude with this bumper sticker.. def pulled up at the next night to exchange a “yeaaaa maaaaaannn”

it was just lazy, off-tune, and sounded terrible. outdoor open park so the sound just blew away, but he did nothing to make a show, just stood there and played and both times he was off the stage at the 45:01 mark
and god forbid anyone used the bathrooms that night....

I met this super freaky dude named Jonny Kosmo at a bbq last weekend, it was his house and he was absolutely the life of the party in a really fun way and I assumed he was drunk but it turns out he's clean off junk for 8 years and crushing life, just one of those steve-o type badass sober warriors. At some point he gave us a little tour of his converted recording garage in the back and it had a large but not prominent dancing bear flag and I thought, this guy's alright
Anyway he's not remotely affiliated with any dead scene but he put out a record today i think? And it's exactly the right grooves all the way throughout
Here's the track that made me think to post about this here

1/8/66 Viola Lee Blues is a fuckin trip... Pig plays such simple parts but he has this intuitive sense of when to shift Jerry into overdrive through these staccato organ assaults that create these huge washing crescendos, and after each one the band sort of reconfigures with a new trajectory until the next one.. it’s not the formless chamber music telepathy they’d develop in 68, but it still has a lot to say
moving on to 11/19/66.. Pig’s organ is all over this tape too.. Midnight Hour is the big jam from this night at 18 min, I know I’ve listened before because it’s one of the best tapes available from that year, but I’ll report back and then keep sliding into 67

it’s a middle of the road pigpen rap.. Garcia’s peppy, but there’s very little bombast or exploration
I loved the rest of the show though
He Was a Friend of Mine is always sooooooooo good
