i don't want to get my hopes up, but how sick would it be if ted cruz lost?

that beto video about kneeling for the anthem was good. i rolled my eyes a bit when he said "reasonable people can disagree about this" -- how reasonable is it to deny athletes' first amendment rights? -- but he's running in a deep-red state, so that approach probably makes sense. anecdotally at least, he does seem to be winning over republicans, somehow. (that buzzfeed profile of him was a good read.)

It probably helps that Ted Cruz can't help but be one of the most unlikable people on the planet

so re-reading the Salazar article, it's definitely this gross hit piece that (I suppose understandably for a center-right Jewish publication) is mostly concerned with the apparent "fluidness" of Jewish identity, especially her move away from Zionism, but the stuff about how she's definitely said she's an immigrant and a lot of major publications have run with that idea and how she's definitely not an immigrant is a bit of a harder thing to square away. would feel a lot better hearing how they response to that part of it

this article is very strange. it seems like its trying to poke holes in her bio, but also seems to recognize that they're unable to do so, nonetheless they're still... suspicious? of the evolution of her views. they also seem completely baffled by the fact that she grew up in a house with both jewish and christian heritage.

and bari seems to be boiling this down to a bad faith basic take

I don't really care. It sounds like her parents were going back and forth between Colombia and Miami and she was actually born in Miami.

So her claiming immigrant status is a bit :? , but I can understand the fluidity of the whole half-American, half-Colombian thing. Speaking as someone with a similar background (swap Puerto Rico for Colombia), my hispanic/latino identity is absolutely something I can turn on and off and I do depending on the circumstances and situations I find myself in. I can also relate to wanting to make more out of it than it actually is. I think it's something a lot of people with one parent who came from somewhere else struggle with.

Now, whether she's inflating it or using it in some sort of disingenuous way is another matter all together.
