Viz wrote:The narrative that I've come to believe about this period is that yeah, they were really tired and they just didn't want to be Beatles anymore, except for Paul, more or less. But the appearance of video cameras plus bringing in Billy Preston rekindled some "I actually like playing with these guys" vibes for them. I think if they hadn't committed to being filmed, if they didn't end acrimoniously, they would just have drifted apart.

I'm listening to a great podcast series on this now (One Sweet Dream). really upended my thoughts about all this! I now think John actually wanted the Beatles to continue more than Paul.

yeah i wasn't expecting this having tseen the original, but yeah it made me miss playin music w my friends and it was so nice to see them all goofin off and shit

yeah i remember the implication of let it be was "these guys hate each other and are miserably struggling to make an album" and it seems more like "these dudes are absolutely burned out and have to make an album and performance in a few weeks, but they all clearly love each other like brothers"

the timeline is fucking insane. they finished recording the White Album near the end of October and got together at the beginning of January to write an entire new album they had no songs for. insane.

I hope there is some negative criticism from the mainstream critics about how Peter turned up all the upscaling into the uncanny valley
John really creeps me out in a hologram way

I'm sure the fact that it was filmed with 16mm film and then is presented in 16:9 informed the cleanup. The negative press of a heavy film grain "old looking" presentation outweighs the negative press of the noise reduced smoothed out version.

Still, you'd like to think they could have found some sort of happy medium.

One hour in and it's nice to know that writing Don't Let Me Down is almost as tedious as listening to it.

Well restored scans of 16mm footage look amazing, I’m so annoyed we won’t get to see that ever

I love that, just like everyone else in 1969, they figured that they could always fall back on covering I Shall Be Released if all else failed.

Stuff like that and talking about watching The Move on TV and watching a BBC movie based on the same book that Freejack was based on are those times that help ground them firmly in reality.
