unrelated to anything specific on this page but i wish i could convince my mom that someone being diametrically opposed to trump doesn't automatically make them good

i spent this morning trying to explain to her that bloomberg fucking sucks and his tryhard meme campaign isn't going to work no matter what the media says and just now my mom said she felt sorry for michael avenatti

I think I need to develop a good pithy way to address the idea that one's first priority can actually be defeating Trump while also expressing the desire to send Bloomberg to the depths of hell. And thus I hereby unveil my proprietary formula that scores every candidate on weighted values of your electoral priorities * candidate's likelihood of fulfilling said priorities

like even if you somehow believe that Bloomberg is most likely to beat Trump, the amount of error around that estimate is so huge that it could never ever overcome how fucking terrible he is unless you actually just truly like him

I think I'm mostly using this post as a notes draft for one person I know

i had to make this argument to my aunt this morning, and i was a little flustered because it was the first time i'd ever encountered someone who was considering voting for bloomberg

i tried to go with some combination of: polls show all of the major candidates doing well against trump 1 v1 in the general so don't worry so much about electability; and all the candidates have potential liabilities when it comes to electability -- in bloomberg's case, it's the fact that he doesn't excite anyone, that not only will he not inspire people to turn out in the general, but his past statements, positions, and policies and everything he represents are completely anathema to large segments of the democratic party right now that he may actively depress democratic turnout

the first one didn't go over so well, but i feel like i might have made some headway with the second argument

During a November 2016 speaking event at Oxford University in England, the former New York City mayor suggested that Obama had failed to address issues of racial segregation:

I would argue that today we are more segregated, in America certainly, than we were, in terms of race, than we were a dozen years ago, and yet we’re just finishing up eight years with our first Black president. “Why are we more separated than we were before?” is the question you’ve got to ask yourself. Why during the Obama administration didn’t we pull together? Ask the president. That’s his job really to pull people together.
