Basic data plans, like the ones for 3g modems, are cheaper than voice plans. I wonder if I could just get a cheap data plan and no voice plan, and use Skype and/or Google Voice for everything.

Also, I hope this isn't $500

possibly. just go to the store and tell them you have a modem and want a sim with just a data plan. see what happens.

real tmobile stores have never been a problem with me. i've only ever had issues at tmobile resellers. no experience with other providers though.

I have an HTC Hero and not having a keyboard is slightly annoying sometimes. Sprint also has a 4G phone from HTC being announced next week. Android is just awesome and will keep getting better.

android is really, really messy. there are far too many released versions, and it seems like every handset supports a different one. total pain in the ass to develop for.

it's pretty much gonna be the iphone from now until the forseeable future. Windows mobile 7 will probably be good (and nowhere close to the abomination that was windows mobile 5/6), but I really think it's gonna be tough for other phones to catch up in the near term. Apple is too far ahead, and for the time being the competition will just push them further.

A few years out? Who knows.

Eh, not really.

The same code seems to work 99.9% of the time in all versions of the sdk.

developer pros:
you don't have to deal with apple
it's java (which doesn't require you to own a mac)
the sdk integration with eclipse is great with a decent emulator
amazingly easy to debug on phones themselves
you can even get users to help you debug by sending you the android error logs

Windows Mobile 7 actually looks pretty badass, but it's hilarious that they're going to go through the same multitasking/cut&paste bullshit that Apple did.

copy and paste is a funny issue, because i definitely use it on my phone, but i don't use it a lot. but i definitely put the iphone down for having it.

i guess it would be annoying when you do want to use it, and it isn't there.
