i'm p sure i've said this on the board before but is there anything as redundant as putting "a novel" on the front of a novel? why is it a thing? it's so prevalent too. i dunno why it irks me so much. sorry to derail. back 2 bolano.

re-reading 2666 is definitely making me feel cosmic and spooky and mysterious. vaguely surreal things keep happening (or maybe they always have) and i find myself nodding and thinking, "yes, that's right, why wouldn't something be that way."

last night my friend found a bunch of paintings of christ in a trash can on a street corner and she pulled them out and took them home. later she sent me photos of them and we discussed them late into the night.

the scene where liz norton dreams of herself and her dead self in the hotel room in santa teresa is maybe the most terrifying thing i have ever read. i re-read that scene again in a very dark bar by candlelight and felt a chill go up my spine.

The Bolano stuff that creeps me out usually has a sexual-spatial component fwiw

That New Yorker short story of his about sex in the bath house was legit scary because there was all this fucking but you couldn’t see what was going on or get orientated to space

i read and really enjoyed by night in chile (at the recommendation of this thread!), but I could see it feeling too untethered if you hadn't spent a lot of time thinking about Allende and Pinochet

not stylistically, but a lot of the parts with Pinochet reminded me of Caetano Veloso writing about his imprisonment in Brazil. Like he was arrested on some fake charge for playing weird psychedelic music for young people and there were two people who worked for the dictatorship that questioned him (1) some law and order military functionary who was confused as to why Veloso was still in jail when it appeared that he didn't break the law (2) some secret police type dude that caetano felt closer to because they both jointly understood that Veloso was in jail for being vaguely weird and subversive not for any obvious crime

i forked a bite of chipotle into my mouth and wondered if the food wasn't just a semblance of food, like anything else at an office desk was a semblance of itself, each containing only a fraction of a vestige of the universe and the chaotic things in it that existed to produce them

Was at the bar with Milano boy earlier and made him read the little bit where liz norton has the nightmare of her dead double and he was very blown away by it

Just finished reading the new translation of The Spirit of Science Fiction. It’s good! But it feels anachronistic to read, because while bingo was correct that the description of it reads like a parody of a bolaño, at the time it was written in Spanish it was really much more of a seed of a lot of themes he worked with later. There’s a bit of an uncanny resemblance to savage detectives, and that makes sense since it seems like a blueprint for the madero sections of SD, but it really is quite a bit of fun to read. Would recommend!

It's funny how often Bolano worked with the same themes and stories in different books

I like Amulet a lot because it's a different perspective on SD stuff too
