the development from "6 feet beneath the moon" to this is one is so huge. i only really go back to the krockdile on it and just listen to the zoo kid demos of the other tracks

Obsessed with The Ooz right now. For those not digging it, give it time. Shit's got layers.

This is how it went for me.
Friend who's music taste I trust tells me this is the best thing he's heard in a while.
I get excited and put on the album ASAP
I'm like, the fuck is this?
Nah, I'm a guy who can give an album a chance. I'll keep going...
The fuck.... how's this the best thing you heard in a while?!
8 tracks in I give up. No way. That's total shite. No fucking thanks brah! Def not my cuppa tea.
Carry on with my day.
Next day I'm driving to work and I don't wanna hear that train wreck again... but I put it on. I don't even know why I do, but I do.
Nah, this is a mess. Just a mess.
Well that song's good,
and this one's ok, but what a mess. Ima get outta this truck and go do stuff.
...
Dum surfer playing in my head
Hmmmm well I like that one song.
I'm looking for some time to just hear that song again, maybe a little Biscuit Town too, but that's all I want.
Ok, this is pretty good, but there's no way i'm playing this record around my girlfriend!
I like it though.

...I think I love this record.
I LOVE this FUCKING RECORD!
I feel like he really gets me!!
I want it all the time.
Can't get enough.
...I just gotta find the right time, just the right mood, to show it to my girlfriend...

i'm still at that stage that i've listened to this every day (only half a day cause it's way too fucking long) for four days but I still want to hate it really bad but something sounds cool about it

like I want it to be frank ocean but it's definitely not and won't ever be but something is still kind of intriguing like that album was for me when I didn't really want to like it

This has become something I love to just have on in the background, but it's odd because generally the albums I'll just leave on are really consistent in tone and I guess because of that are really forgiving if your attention drifts towards and away from them. This is all over the place stylistically and dynamically and occasionally just grabs you after you've maybe tuned out during one of the quieter or more repetitive sections. I don't know if it's the specific blend of styles or just the sequencing or what but it's weirdly demanding for something that works so well as ambiance and weirdly successful as ambiance for something so demanding.

this record truly slays. i thought the pacing was off slash it was a bit front loaded at first but it might be perfect. i can't stop listening.

mostly though there's this rare thing with an artist or an album or whatever where it just seems so completely idiosyncratic or alluring in some way and you actually feel it when you listen to it. it doesn't happen very often but then when it does you're like "ohhhhh fuck"

i don't wanna compare it to other classic canon albums, because that's too easy. it's just a great piece of work.

The Emperor's Son wrote:after a few more spins i'm really into it but i definitely had a bad reflex the first go-through as some of the vocals seemed to tipped into tom waits like over-caricature.

i thought about waits at first too, but then he started to remind me more often of thirlwell

whoever said tricky is spot on, i remember having similarly immersive obsessions with his first few albums, esp. pre-millenium tension and nearly god

those are about a decade overdue for a dust-off come to think of it

yeah, this came up on a spotify discovery play list a couple years ago and i was like, "this is cool, but i'm certain it's locked into the genre of deep voiced poetic guy pontificating over choice snippets of sound, which i'm not interested in exploring much further"

but i was wrong... the dynamics going on here are not only unpredictable but sort of amazing
