finally saw this, really liked it. i was a little let down at first because i had heard it described as his closest thing to pulp fiction, but it turned out to be more like jackie brown than anything, which is fine by me but i was looking forward to hearing a few classic self-indulgent tarantino conversations about the details of life or whatever in the voices of these new characters. leo's scene with the little actor girl was one of my favorite parts of the movie. once i realized what it wasn't, i enjoyed it a lot more and i loved the ending, especially pitt on acid. i almost never see a movie twice in theaters but i might for this one now that i know what to expect.

Were the shots of Rick in the great escape him actually doing the film? Maybe a few days on set, then ultimately being fired? Or just his fantasy. I took his kind of snappiness with Olyphants character in that scene as signs he was actually deep in the production of Great Escape and something happened.

I think he is basically lying about having never been on the film, which he perhaps was cast in and then fired from and replaced with McQueen after a few days/weeks. It feels like another nod to Hollywood lore about this or that person being cast and replaced, or turning down a role that became iconic, etc. How different the world might have been if only this or that.
Rick is basically saving face by downplaying his involvement in the film because he doesn't want to acknowledge having lost that part. You could say that these alternate castings are a sort of parallel to the alternate histories that Tarantino has been working through in Inglorious and Django. And how much the course of a life (and a culture) can hinge on some fluke thing like the Manson gang going to one house instead of another, etc.
What became of her? She lived, as she liked to say, off the kindness of gentlemen. I assume she’s dead.

If a cigarette was truly dipped in a solution of acid, gotta believe the smoke passing through the unburned parts would create acid vapor or something. I bet one of those things would send you to the moon.
I caught a bit of Pulp Fiction on AMC yesterday. I haven't seen it in years, and, for whatever its flaws, there's a lot of incredible filmmaking there. The Thurman overdose/trip to Eric Stoltz's house is wonderful gallows slapstick, exquisitely paced and perfectly performed by everyone on screen. The movies!
the lsd in the part that is getting smoked would surely break down in the heat but i hadn't considered the filter part of it. i guess that makes it legit? in the theater i was like this is total bullshit
Was thinking about Timothy Olyphant (of Deadwood fame who noticeably hard to place without a mustache) talking to Rick Dalton (who was transformed with a fake mustache). And how this interaction takes us out of the narrative and makes us think about the artifice of acting and film-making. Also I wish QT wasn't so interested himself being a celebrity
A tab of acid is really tiny and a couple are enough to get you tripping for 6-12 hours. The filter of a joint could easily transfer a few hits' worth to you while you smoked. Would be more efficient to dip just the filter, but if you've got enough liquid LSD to submerge a joint, you're probably not that worried about conserving it.
the more i think about it the more i think my favorite parts of this film are all non-verbal
brad driving around in his thunderbird, leo digging deep during his big scene, margot robbie watching other people watch her. so much beautiful stuff going on
If I didn't know anything about Tarantino as a person, I'd assume this movie was meant to show that your preference for Rick and Cliff over the hippies is a purely aesthetic preference. Like, you could take the script of this movie and make a pro-hippie/anti-cowboy movie out of it with very few structural changes.
