i got a bit obsessed with Simon when i started playing bass at 17. Not only did i think he looked the coolest of the whole band (except maybe in his horrible goth mullet phase in the mid 80's), but i loved so many of his basslines (i learned to play to The cure pretty much) and I used to want to have his custom Dick Knight late 80s early 90's bass so badly (which i later found out he mostly got because Peter hook famously has a similar custom one he's been using since like the mid 80's). Not only did it look awesome, but it had the best sound. Those are the ones (the tuned down white one and the standard tuned black one) he's using in Show as seen on this one small picture i could find.
Problem was i couldnt afford customs (nevermind a dick knight being that he's a small british luthier...). And the Gibson EB-2 the body is based on, well aside from being expensive, those basses sound like shit for my tastes (they're 60's basses that use that terrible Gibson neck mudbucker as they are infamously called, i mean if youre going for a 60's sound, great but to anyone else it sounds like ass). A few years ago when i had some money to spare though it became my obsession to finally get myself something similar, and i did. An obscure but affordable brand called Douglas was making one with the same Eb-2 body. It only has one humbucker in the middle and so it doesn't have the same range of sound, but it satisfies me enough. It's actually a really decent bass despite being only worth something like 500$. here it is on the left
now, two decades too late for it, i can finally fantasy roleplay as Simon Gallup in my living room. Or even Peter Hook if i cared to.
That's amazing Milk. Simon still is the coolest looking in the band. I had the exact same obsession but with Boris Williams when I first started playing the drums at 13. I'm still struck with a lot of his drum patterns. Have you ever seen them in concert?
yeah Simon is definitely my favorite bass player of all time. and Boris is up there for drummers. like, the rhythm sections for "fascination street" and "disintegration" are so perfect

yeah when i saw them on curiosa they were VERY wise and alternating one new song and one classic for like the first ten songs or something. Then they just played old ones. And yeah i don't like the 2004 record at all (or anything past wish, well WMS has 5 good songs) but those songs didn't even sound so bad live.
gf saw them as early as KMKMKM tour (to quote Venture Bros: "what does that make you? 50?" "No, just cool"..shes 45 actually) which im very jealous of. And again on Disintegration tour. Somehow she didn't see them on Wish tour cause she doesnt rate anything past disintegration and the thing is she lived in Flint then so if she WOULD have seen them on that tour it would have been in detroit which means SHE'D BE IN THE SHOW CROWD. Talk about stupidly missing a date with destiny.

That's awesome that she saw them on the Disintegration/Prayer tour. That would have been one monster of a gig. But then again i'm jealous of my mum for seeing them during the Wish tour.
apropros random fact about gf actually. She's from Crawley (shes british american in that, she was born in england and her family is/was english but part of the family were in america working in Flint's car industry so she spent her summers there until eventually she moved there for good in her teens). Thing is...she didn't even realise The Cure were from crawley until i told her. Probably because unlike me shes never been obsessive about them.

That's cool. My mum was very much a casual fan when she saw them. But she played them often enough when I was a kid for me to become a fan, so I'll always thank my mum for that.
The day I got the High cd single I decided the only way to dub the b-sides for a girl I had a crush on who was going with me to see them at the Philly Spectrum a few weeks later was to call her home phone and record This Twilight Garden, Play, and of course the Higher Remix into her family's answering machine. Her dad checked the machine first and was super annoyed the I filled up the tape so we ended up being driven to the show separately and a few weeks later I moved to Germany. She still makes fun of me about this whenever we connect on fb.
i have loved the cure for a long time but just this year i realized how brilliant seventeen seconds and faith are. helluva run from 79-92 for the most part
love this and always was so disappointed it wasnt on the cd. This is one of the top songs on Wish. But thanks to mp3's i a long time ago ripped the songs that weren't on the Show album (the whole encore and the walk and lets go to bed) and added them to my folder so that i can listen to this whole show without having to watch the vhs.
