I just somehow added Nancy to a work email thread that contained a client's personal information (SSID, DOB, Diagnosis, etc.)

This is very... not good.

Uh if you're emailing that kind of info you already have a problem

well its not my problem, as long as i dont add non-employees to the god damn chain.

the department i was emailing contacted me about it and said that they make this sort of mistake all the time (!!!) and i shouldn't feel too bad (i do).

i agree with nathan tho that its your own dumb companies fault for having these sorts of lax procedures in the first place. that sort of stuff should be heavily encrypted.

my understanding is that microsoft exchange somehow meets the encryption standards of HIPAA but yeah they really should have systems in place for attached files

Season 4 of Fargo where John Plainman finds and confronts Nancy to cover his tracks at work and accidentally murders her (also she is a 17 year old boy)

You might get lucky and her email was already shutdown by the provider since it was being used for scamming.

Both Google Apps and Microsoft Office 365 offer ways to send secure email messages now. I think where you can delete the attachments.

I don't think HIPAA says anything about this, but it doesn't matter when your straight up email the info to a third party lol

Tell Nancy she's party to a HIPAA violation, punishable by a fine of up to $95 but you'll let it go if she PayPal's you $90

Yes I'm saying that the email tech details are irrelevant when you just do the violation directly

like the secretaries shouting at each other across the office about mrs. so-and-so's polyps and mr. whats-his-face's heart medicine and people's fucking files just laying around open on the desk where you go to get your 50 pages of redundant paperwork to fill out so they can proudly display it to the next person
