Yeah, this is the only one that was worth the effort for me. If he would do more terrible vintage HBO shows like Arliss and The Mind of a Married Man it would be a pretty good segment. I have no idea what the contemporary stuff is.

there were outlandishly bad moments (hence the groaning) but some moments where they managed to pull off cohesive ideas that were funny. i think Sam's biggest weakness (excluding his obvious bigotry) is his inability to tackle his ideas through a more professional lens and actually string stuff together into a polished format - it may have worked for his initial youtube stuff but he wasn't necessarily "ready for primetime" and that showed often in this show, although the ratings did exceed Eric Andre's first season so who knows

chapo getting the boot on reddit is exactly why you just gotta let the shitty communities on these platforms be

when any platform like reddit tries to meet demands of deleting/banning problematic people/groups on their platform, they have to justify it by applying the same treatment across the board in recognition of both political sides of the aisle. it was the same shit with Carlos Maza & Steven Crowder, everyone knows Crowder sucks ass and is toxic but he technically wasn't violating any of YouTube's policies since he wasn't literally telling his followers to harass Carlos. so in order for youtube to bring some kind of consequence down on the channel, they had to implement tougher rules to their policy that ultimately impacted a lot of people who weren't doing anything wrong but were nevertheless being politically expressive.

without getting into the crowder thing, which i know little about, it is true though that slippery slope has historically proven itself a valid argument on free speech issues. chomsky makes the same argument auspice makes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSTsdkbQEeA&feature=youtu.be&t=19m30s

regardless of what courts want to say, on a practical level the tech companies have such a monopoly on discourse that they operate as public forums. i don't get how it's woke to beg and trust capitalists to be our censors

i could be missing something, but i don't even see where reddit cited examples from the chapo sub of which posts specifically violated the rules. it seems anti-democratic and politically ineffective to me that the response to someone saying something you don't like is just to report them to the censors. you are betting that you are going to be better at it than the other side, and that is not a good bet to make in America

the point I was getting at was that these platforms exist purely to accrue capital through ad dollars, and when they get to a certain size, they can't just spontaneously remove or demonetize a popular channel in pure reaction to public demand if that channel isn't technically violating the rules they've outlined. Crowder sucks but his bullying of Maza was careful in that he never literally incited followers to harass Maza, nor did he resort to literal slurs to describe. instead, he fell back on hokey mannerisms to signal his juvenile homophobia, which is obvious to everyone who watched those videos sans the most robotic of corporate YouTube stooges.

so if YouTube decides the public outcry is too much and they have to do respond, they can't do so without altering their terms of service so that such a move now makes sense, and I believe they did so by expanding what constitutes "bullying" under their policies. the problem is that move therefore expanded the subjectivity of their definition to the point where it could theoretically allow a much larger subset of people to cry wolf on "bullying" for any video discussing them in a critical light, including, let's say, the same sorts of videos Carlos Maza made criticizing public online figures for their bullshit. this in turn led to many channels who had nothing to do with the Crowder/Maza channel getting demonetized/banned for the most innocuous of discussions over politics/culture/whatever

is the point that Maza didn't have a right to be upset and seek some sort of consequence for Crowder? of course not, he had every right to be mad, but these corporations don't give a shit about him or any of us at the end of the day. every move is calculated to fit a certain corporate image and please sponsors. it's not different from the years spent demanding that brand like Marvel do more for queer representation only for them to stick a gay guy into a five minute Avengers scene showing group counseling. this shit does not matter to them and when they do briefly give in you will only be upset with the actual results, because they are never coming from a place of genuine empathy.

remember when Mike Cernovich got Disney to fire James Gunn and people lost their minds and immediately came to the defense of a guy making non-stop pedo jokes on his public Twitter account when he was in his late 30s. that was the result of Cernovich going "what if we used their own proclivity towards dogpiling against them?" and it worked like a charm then.

you just can't hand the reins of moral arbitration over to the biggest corporations in America. look at how Facebook basically threw its hands up in the air when it came to dealing with the alt-right takeover of their platform. Twitter appears to be pretending to take it more seriously but I feel like every other day I see tweets about a popular leftist account being inexplicably suspended.
