You can collect herbs now and fish

It’s crazy how much it really feels and looks like a true Shenmue 2 sequel

Graphics are much nicer than I expected. Some of the NPCs are a little too cartoony looking, though

It is great just hanging out in a peaceful village, chatting g with folks and training, collecting herbs, trying to get new fishing lures from the gacha machines

Totally off putting for anyone not sold on Shenmue, I guess, but absolutely Shenmue. Game is certainly easy enough to make fun of if you’re used to playing the latest in AAA, but for me it’s incredible.

The music is a bit of a letdown though

They didn’t seem to really give it much thought

Music is quality, but it’s not integrated well

the shitty facial animations and abrasively awkward dialogue / camera cutting is making it really hard for me to want to be in this world. i wish they had put the same level of care into those things as the closets and drawers. also i am missing why there are a bunch of carnies with crappy games that no one but i am playing in this tiny village. i fear not coming into this with shenmue 1&2 goggles may be a roadblock for me.. but i'm going to bare with it a bit longer because i really do want to get it.

I’m enjoying talking to Shenhua at night, waking up and picking up herbs on the way to town, training moves, and just kind of exploring the area. The cutscene editing is absolutely terrible, especially compared to how good it was in the originals. That’s a definite letdown. I also switched the VA to Japanese, which has improved things immeasurably. The pacing and the immersive ness are still very much on point for me, and I am looking forward to getting to the larger area which I understand is very dense and wild.

I feel like the presence of the carnies is explained by Shenhua at one point.

I'm still in Bailu too and so far the experience has been mixed for me.

On the one hand, it's a real nostalgia trip. The game truly does feel like Shenmue with its sense of being absorbed in a world and its mundanity. Talking to Shenhua at night about small things, her saying 'good day' to you as you leave for town, etc. After all the 'follow the dotted line' open world games it's also nice to go back to a game where you figure out your next objective by talking to people. I loved GD4 of Shenmue 2 and I really enjoy the chill and verdant landscapes of rural China. The environments are gorgeous. I love the flowers swaying in the breeze and the sugarloaf mountains in the background. The herb gathering is a welcome addition and feels very Shenmue. Most of the mini games are great too.

On the other hand there are a number of things that bug me. As mentioned, the editing is completely off and breaks the flow of the game. The faces are also inconsistent. In 1 & 2 Shenmue's faces fell in a sort of stylized realism. You can find good examples of this in 3 with the old couple who runs the eatery in village square. However some other faces look grotesquely cartoonish. It breaks the immersion because how could those people inhabit the same world? Ryo's and Shenhua's are a little too cute for my taste but they do the job. The menus and UI are almost uniformly ugly. That awful red circle highlight needs to go, it feels too 'follow the dotted line'.

But perhaps the biggest issue for me is the sense of immersion, but that's because it pales in comparison to 1 and especially 2. There's a feeling of awe in 2 at the world you're immersed in, not really so much at its size as at its density. There's so much attention to detail everywhere, every nook and cranny has something to offer, it's a joy to just look at the variety of interiors or stalls or side alleys. The world feels real and complete and lived-in, with the characters having their own schedules and living out their lives. This is why 2 has such an insane replay value, because there's always something new to look at or discover and little easter eggs everywhere. So far I don't think 3 will be worth replaying a lot (although I'm only in the first region so I could be wrong), because you can already see the cracks in the world.

Of course I recognize that this is down to budget and time constraints. If I consider 3 for what it is, a kickstarted indie game, then it's a success. It offers a beautiful world filled with things to do and contemplative moments. But it also often feels like the shadows in Plato's cave, a tantalizing glimpse of what a fully fleshed-out 3 could have been. I know realistically there will never be another AAA Shenmue game but you just can't get rid of those kinds of expectations.
