Of course, he’s not the only artist with problematic views. Stephen King has called HP Lovecraft “the greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale”. Joyce Carol Oates describes his influence upon all writers as “incalculable”.
But, and here’s the thing, Lovecraft wasn’t a very pleasant man.

huh?

While such friends on courses like engineering and maths reeled around the student union to Mousse T ft. Tom Jones, I’d retire to my bedroom and play Belle and Sebastian, hoping against hope that a sensitive woman might be passing by the window, forced to stop and knock a tentative knuckle against the glass and enquire after the obviously very cool and in-no-way-laddish lad who lay within.

There's all kind of memes about Lovecraft being a racist and having a dog named after a racist slur, but I haven't researched Wikipedia to confirm it's true.

yeah lovecraft was a racist. the more I am thinking about it I am misreading, I thought he was trying to compare morrissey to king and oates (like why is he bringing them into this) when he is probably just comparing morrissey directly to lovecraft, which would make actual sense

Yeah it's worded badly. I think it's also something about how we don't cancel dead writers like Lovecraft but mainly pop stars and celebrities, and how it's not ok to be into those writers.

whenever I listen to the Smiths these days I feel like the lyrics are some Jordan Peterson shit... in times of teenage angst, morrissey is alright, 10 years later, the music is still good but the message fails hard... same thing with bright eyes and other angst artists.... morrissey finds another generation of angst everytime^^

morrissey and his lyrics are so fucking narcissistic...
and all the smiths lyrics assume some feeling of entitlement where there is none... good music, toxic message.
fucking there is a light ... nice song, I can feel it, but the message is toxic...
