I can’t decide if it should be Shallow or I’ll Never Love Again for Best Original Song

I’ll Never Love Again is more powerful, but Shallow has had a bigger cultural impact

they should both be nominated! that’d be a hard choice to vote on

actually, awards pundits say the brilliant song "Why Did You Do That" off the "A Star is Born" soundtrack, sung by American recording artist Lady Gaga, has the best chance of nabbing some Oscars gold next year!

What I want that’s actually feasible would be a “concert cut” of ASIB that edits together all the live performances for which there was uninterrupted camera coverage of full songs

between all the live bits that aren’t the whole song, and the montages, you can tell they’re sitting on a completely viable Bradley and Gaga Live concert film

I thought this had some magic but was pretty underwhelmed on the whole, and I definitely feel the points laid out in this Vox article: https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/cultur ... ism-sexism

That article is so disrespectful to Ally

Edit: I take it back, sorry. I don’t want to discount anyone’s individual reading of the Star Is Born tale.

Are there some sexist and outdated patriarchal elements to the tale? Absolutely.

But a wise man once said, "Maybe its time to let the old ways die." And I think a calculated and arguably subversive effort to do so should be welcomed and not necessarily placed solely in the modern social gaze.

also it's probably been mentioned in the thread already given the board we're on but this was a hard watch as an ageing alcoholic and thinking about all of the relationships which it trashed.

that Vox article fucking sucks

no version of A Star Is Born has ever cared about her psychological makeup, pivoted around her decisions, or given her much agency over her own career.

i just watched the '37 version and the first half-hour is all about Janet Gaynor's agency and psychology and anxieties before Fredric March even shows his face. it's mega trivializing of what all actors who have played the female role have managed to accomplish in terms of performance/characterization. get fucked Vox!
