re: clothes i wear

shifts in lifestyle and climate have significantly deformalized me. i don't really need to "impress anyone" anymore, i'm not at all into the nerdier aspects of clothes like i used to be (being like 17 and trying to Hold That Attolini did me zero favors and i discourage anyone reading from pursuing it)

soft, well-fitted knits (tees/sweaters — my neck/shoulders cause cluster headaches), black or white jeans, side-zip chisel toed boots or loafers, or "workout shit"

i don't need much else and i've got shit i thrifted in high school that looks like it could have had the tags clipped 15 seconds ago

it occurred to me shortly after moving to LA that regular (business) suit-wearing is mostly either a flex about your constant air-conditionedness/ability to maintain "a wardrobe" of corresponding/complementary items (these are my burnished tan balmorals, which i of course needed to purchase a new belt for, which goes in the custom shelving unit and oh who is your contractor anyway?)

or

an outward signal of submission

so in your formulation of fashion there's a.01% margin where you are genuine, expressive, non-conforming and also environmentally conscious. that's a really high bar and a lot of steam for something that would be hard for anyone (monied or not) to accomplish.

I'm reading it as "just thrift interesting things" which I think is pretty fair and a good rule of thumb for anybody.

These days I'm even buying my court suits secondhand.

The fact that you think you're completely free of any influences whatsoever is hilarious. Just because you waste time adapting whatever's trending on styleforum/ask andy about clothing or whatever and choose to base your decisions on co-option or rejection of those trends doesn't mean you're any better than someone who's influence is determined by irl. People on these lameass men's forums treat "high-tier clothing" in an almost disposable fast-fashion way. It's probably "better" since these clothes are more likely to be "environmentally-conscious", "sustainably-made", "ethical-working conditions" whatever.

If you really want to be a positive force in your consumption of clothes don't buy new or walk around naked. Even sustainably made new clothes consume resources as opposed to thrifted clothing where the resource consumption has already been done and that's a given.

Alternatively chill out and let people do whatever they want.

what's recommend for cleaning boots prior to applying obenauf or whatever? Just some saddle soap or red wing foam cleaner or..?

I've just been wiping them down with a damp cloth but I figure my boots could stand a proper cleaning.
