When the Witch was released, a24 partnered with the Satanic Temple and allowed them to tour with the movie/do live readings and performances before the flick. They’re meme-based marketing is just kinda like ok cool man.

I feel like this distribution company is one of the most mercenary there is. It was created by finance group veterans and their whole bag is buying up and licensing rights to small budget vanity projects for stars or eclectic genre flicks that they can market like prestige shit. They’re on that Blumhouse tip of buying up rights to movies and making the money on distribution or putting very minimal budgets to partially fund the flicks up front, but they don’t just do horror. The stakes are always low.

I like a lot of the movies that they stamp and release, incidentally. Their bread-and-butter are lower-mid tier genre and genre-tinged dramas that would have been funded and released by the major studios back when they had a diversified offering each year and didn’t have the majority of their budgets tied up in three or four movies.
