The primary reason I long ago stopped answering phone calls from numbers not in my contact list.

i get texts from this one person who is convinced my name is Johnny, so the pitch is always "Johnny... was that you??? I needed to have a talk about your health insurance" somehow insinuating that i had like a personal interaction with them previously

i was just going to make this thread

it's so bad. it didn't start happening to me until last year, which made me wonder if congress rolled back some legislation that made it ok to start doing this.

that or when i became the main point of contact for my father's health decisions, his insurance sold my phone number to marketing agencies or something lol

neither would surprise me

I get neighbor spoofing in the abstract, but for the life of me I can't figure out why these people feel going the extra step to match my prefix is going to convince me to answer.

i get these constantly and they're always routed through numbers that are slightly similar to my own phone number, like i'm supposed to recognize it and be like "oh, another 271? must be someone i know!"

the android phone app has gotten really good at identifying these and has an option to filter them out. one slips through every once in a while but i almost never get them anymore.

Yeah, I meant, matching the area code I understand as a technique to increase answers, but when both the area code and prefix match, it just seems counterproductively fishy.

I got three of these calls within a few hours. Seems extra sketchy when it’s three different numbers with the same area code AND prefix

I stupidly bought adderall from some shady online pharmacy like 3 years ago.

I've been getting calls from a bunch of different online pharmacies multiple times a week for the past 3 years. the only thing that gets them to stop even temporarily is to just hit "return call" over and over again until they temporarily block your number.

I hate being rude to service workers but they don't stop no matter how politely you ask and it was multiple times a day at its peak. I thought I was gonna go insane

This is basically how I treat my phone, and yeah, the spam texts have ramped up over the past couple of months. I can't tell whether it's in response to my not returning robocalls (I get anywhere from 5 to 20 per day) or because I somehow got on a spam text list.

I hate my phone and routinely ignore it for days, so whatever. Anybody who actually knows me and needs to get in touch knows to do it by email or Google/FB messaging.

I used to never pick up my phone for unexpected numbers, but after a stint of job searching/apartment hunting/volunteering stuff I was picking up my phone more regularly
they must have someone to log how often somebody picks up the phone, because once I started picking up more the spam calls ramped up a thousand fold

it's so insidious, I hate it. I hate living in America and having to be on edge that I'm gonna get scammed at every turn, it's such a shit way to live
