heyyy it's blab's science corner. let's do some science

i had a song stuck in my head (zombie by the cranberries) and looked up the hard science about getting songs stuck in your head

it's called "involuntary music imagery" (INMI) and that there are people who get this freaking thing 24/7, or "perpetual music track" (PMT)

this shit is harrowing

"I find almost nothing pleasurable about having a PMT [perpetual music track]," the pianist wrote. "Rather, it is quite a distraction most of the time, the kind of thing I wish I could turn off."

The pianist's distaste for earworms extended even to songs that he found most emotive, he wrote — mainly because the most affecting music was also a distraction from real life.

"It tends to be a bit of a bias that we have toward remembering those negative experiences," Jakubowski said.
