The only Americans that are aware of this stuff are from border states that get some Canadian radio signals 30 years ago :D

They should have put this Baby Blue on the Breaking Bad soundtrack instead of the other one.

His videos were always around in my late childhood and i never got what wa sthe deal of this lame looking dude with the hat.

here's more bad cancon that played a lot around that time

Bar band rock...

The thing is their early singles didn't sound like this at all. They were more of their time. Like Things i do for money and Teenland specifically.

Did i post some The box yet? This band was huge in my grade school circa mid to late 80's. I revisited their whole output like 5 years ago, i like the music well enough but Pisapia's lyrics are often pretty bad and it's clear that this is partly because it's not his native (not just though, he's also clearly a bit lame). Especially on their big record Closer Together. Mind you despite the hits that were Closer Together and Ordinary people (this song is so cringe) the tunes sucked by then. Only Crying out loud for love is any listenable on that record. it rips off U2's Pride at some point in the post-chorus too. I read a blog he had like ten years ago and he actually always wanted to do prog (very typical of a Québécois of the time, prog was huge here) but in the 80'S it wasn'T popular anymore so it's how they ended up doing new wave. he was in an early incarnation of Men Without hats and he told how once they opened for The Damned and the crowd spent their whole opening set spitting on them.

Famous Québécois comedy group Rock et Belles Oreilles (they have a kind of legendary status here, the had a tv show in the 80's and early 90's) had a song on their first (comedy) record which was meant to parody the box, it was in english but they sang with a bad accent and the lyrics were about how they sang in English with the hope of making more money. It was frowned upon at the time to sing in English if you were Québécois. It was seen as selling out and kinda being assimilated. Even when Céline did it people didn't like it....until she got so huge they could then only be proud of her. I always thought it was bullshit, French can be a good language for songs if you know how to handle it but i always knew in my teens when i had dreams of making music as a living (yes...) that i was always gonna do songs in English. If nothing else because all the music i ever really loved was and so i'm not sure i'd have known how to write decent lyrics in French. Of course not everyone is as perfectly bilingual as i am (this is the only thing you'll ever see toot my own horn about).

the first hit:

Always was weird to me how the video is made to look like it is in France. I in fact think it might have been filmed there even. And the lines are spoken in a French accent (as opposed to French Canadian).

The first single, which i quite like

Decent single off the second album

I like this tune musically, opener of their second record:

It seemed always pretty clear their guitar player must have been into The Edge.

The last decent single they released i talked about above. This song and the video make me very nostalgic actually.

Totally agree milk. Frickin loved She Ain't Pretty and Girl with a Problem when I was nine or ten, looking back now they're horrible songs. Still enjoy Teenland though.
