yeah its dumb. I don't care enough to straight up delete my account but at the same time I haven't done anything with it in a couple years besides accept friend requests and use the messenger once every few months.

Don't worry, they'll turn it all around by selling you a device that tracks your movements around your home. (Pre-order now at portal.facebook.com!)

"is facebook bad" is a question that becomes a deep dive into "social media consumption" or (thanks Benioff!) "it's addictive you know!" rather than that Facebook Inc. is a bad company doing bad things

this isn't "is tv bad?? we're creating a generation of boob tube zombies!!!!", it's "does this corporation do nefarious, evil things"

this is a good point, and reminds me of the way climate change has been framed as a failure of human nature rather than an indictment of the fossil fuel industry

anyway yes facebook is bad and i should quit, but i still use it for events/messenger :(

Yes, they do. All businesses this size do, this level of capital and its inherent alienation from the people giving it that capital/power will always be bad
I just reread capital in the 21st, thank you for your patience

i don't understand the local events thing

are y'all talking about private parties? i get it when it comes to grad school stuff and friends' bday parties and whatnot but it's pretty stunning that grassroots organizers still use facebook.

if i am interested in an org's local events usually they list those things on their website or the local newspaper/events website will aggregate them or if they are exclusive to facebook i will just google "facebook" "org x" and go to their page and see they have an upcoming event

it's possible to be a user of facebook, twitter, instagram etc without actually having an account. in fact, i'd argue it's way better and easier to use social media platforms that way. you can have the sickest tweetdeck and still be encountering waaaaay too much nonsense. i think approx. 50% of my last 200 posts have been tweets in the election thread and i don't use a twitter account anymore.

I don't really go to things but I imagine people like the convenience of being able to have it come up on their phone via push or whatever else rather than doing old school legwork to figure out what is on
People are just trying to be comfortable and probably don't have time or the inclination to think about it too much even if like my friends they dislike stuff about Facebook and still use it
