I follow a lot of animation industry people on twitter and boy are there Takes about the new Lion King

I can't bring myself to give a shit. 1967 Jungle Book was good. 2016 Jungle Book was good. 1994 Lion King was good. 2018 Lion King will probably be good I'm so tired I can't do this anymore. the takes.

the saddest people are the ones that actually think Disney is likely scrambling to change the color keying or whatever because a hundful of Extremely Onlines are pissed

anyone who loves Cheesecake Factory, leaves their TV on 24/7, and goes to the mall every Saturday afternoon out of habit, they're all going to see this and love the shit out of it. this movie is going to make a billion dollars.

On one hand I get the frustration. Disney has basically immunized themselves from criticism with these things. The strength of the stories and nostalgia is far greater than any technical nitpicking. And they make more good movies than bad, in my opinion.

But it’s unsatisfying to go see something, like I did with Ralph today, and just be like “yeah that was good and enjoyable.” There’s nothing deeper to say about it. Had memorable characters, effective emotion, and cool, novel environments. That’s what all their good movies have and is very much the obvious formula. Bunching in marvel and Star Wars, they are coming at such a volume that there doesn’t seem much to muster outside of Good. Or Bad. I can see that frustrating the more vocal online contingent

In the future we will say there is a new movie in the lion king genre instead of a remake

i saw a trailer that compared the shots from the original w/ the new one and like, even aside from how much i abhor the idea of taking a gorgeous traditionally animated movie and remaking it in CGI to make it more "real", this really does seem artless compared to the original. it's less colorful, the shot composition is less interesting (when it's not directly copying the original), it's weird looking and ugly to have these realistic animal faces gurning like cartoon characters and they also have less character (CGI baby Simba is so much less cute than OG baby Simba omg)

The Lion King is just Hamlet with a happy ending whats the point if it's not a pretty Disney cartoon instead of an ugly one. Can you imagine I Just Can't Wait To Be King in this style? no fun cartoon animation, no bright kaleidoscopic colors while Simba slides down giraffe necks and shit? Fuck that

I really like the term “Extremely Onlines.”

Is that copyright Bad Craziness or is that an existing term that I’ve never come across?

"extremely online" is established as an adjective, but I'm pioneering it as a noun

I think it’s cool that Incredibles 2 fucked with the patriarchy. But the plot was lazy and I hate the baby and his antics.

i'm generally not in favor of these "live-action" remakes on principle but the 2016 jungle book kinda blew me away, probably because i had pretty low expectations. the whole time i was just thinking about how it probably would've been my favorite movie ever if it came out when i was seven years old

it was fun and people ought to be judging the new lion king in the context of that

instead they’re yelling about how this one should have a whimsical technicolor palette and exaggerated characters and not try to do what jungle book did except they don’t even bring up the jungle book

i get this. but...isn't this the same thing as just saying "hey, it's disney they churn out perfectly fine products and you like the lion king so just give them your money, watch the movie and like it"?

i dunno. movies are fucking stupid anyway.
