I just realized I think I liked Zootopia better than any of the other non-Spider-Verse animated films from the last few years.

Damn, Zootopia was ambitious. That's worth a lot to me, but I feel the need to go back and reacquaint with the racial politics of it because I don't recall everything landing so cleanly.

Moana opens with some pretty charming island scenes and songs, it looks great, and then the rest is basically one extended action scene out on the seas. Structurally felt weird and undercooked, there's not much of story or character to grab a hold of from then on, the action itself is not very playful or fun, the movie doesn't have anywhere to go to surprise or delight us.

Out of new Disney/Pixar stuff it does feel to me as though Frozen will have the largest ongoing pop cultural relevance, just in terms of the amount of kids it has and will be a formative movie experience for. Maybe that's partly because it's about white people.

Rewatched it last year, and what struck me more than anything is that it's quite ugly. Especially background elements. Looks like Flash animation.

The movie will make a lot of money. I still can't get over how poor the BatB remake was as a _musical_ though. Really, truly bad. I would get good enjoyment out of these lazy remakes as long as the musical numbers worked and the actors knew how to do them. I'm all for Disney on Broadway on Film.

The songs sounded meh in this new Aladdin trailer as well.

I'm just not feeling the live action remakes, clearly I'm not the target audience here. :)

I’m cautiously optimistic after that new trailer. Maybe they put up an early test render of the genie in the previous teaser as a twisted form of market research
