Robin Williams and Eric Goldberg created such a singular, iconic performance that only really works in 2D animation, and I can’t stomach...whatever this is...being framed as any kind of improvement/upgrade

the rest of the movie at least has merit for lavish production values or whatever, but to go from “magical amorphous being that rapidly shape-shifts into an endless sequence of visual/vocal gags like a DMT elf” to “will smith carefully hitting his choreography marks” is such a catastrophic downgrade it’s giving me some kind of vertigo

Akiva Schaffer, one-third of Lonely Island along with Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, has closed a deal to direct the studio’s live-action/CG hybrid take on Rescue Rangers.

Plot details for Rangers are being squirreled away, but it will not be an origin story nor detective agency story. Rather, the take is being described as being meta, something self-referential and cool.

Chip and Dale were my favorites growing up so this is all starting to hit close to home. An origin or noir-ish detective story is the right call you idiots, nobody needs another Jason Segal Muppets.

meta, self-referential, and cool

"Uh... do you even rescue, bro???"

I love that we're immersing children in irony, snark, and cynicism as early as possible. bodes well for the future.

Speaking of, what exactly is their origin? I love those fucks but still have no idea. Better to not explore it in this planned yuckfest

oh I didn’t mean Lonely Island. I don’t think they wrote it, right? I mean who knows. maybe it’ll be the best thing ever. I’m just picturing some meeting where executives are like, “It’s gotta be COOL.”

I gotta say I did not see all the "actually Aladdin is awesome because of representation" takes on Twitter coming

I mean of course it is great that they cast non-white actors but the movie still looks like hot garbage

It's kinda interesting to hear Menken write what is essentially a standard modern pop song, but I'm not sure if I like the track.

Also Pasek & Paul creeping their way into Disney productions.. that's no good.

the movie was pretty good imo

i dunno about granting disney any representation points in 2019, though, and they always seem to show their hand a bit. the "speechless" song was so overt and out of place it was hard not to eyeroll the whole time. shit like that is offensively on-the-nose and so lazy

it always seems like an afterthought

"oh shit, remember how bad we depicted women in the last one?! well before this goes to print let's make sure to throw one nice 'ladies should be heard!' track, ok?"

i enjoyed this , thank you.

i love aladdin. never saw the sequals. i think people forget that even though there's calculated moves about every single detail , it all depends on a single child's response to it. this new remake movie is none of your business. fuck off. you will never be entertained again, you gave that up a long time ago, when you started reading books. you try making an entertaining movie.

i think we're avoiding what julia roberts did, i mean robin williams. he is not and has never been my personal hero. the closest he ever got was dead poets society, and good will hunting, and tying himself in a closet, at his son's dorm room. i also died at a college. i should have killed myself then. feel it.
