And its layering and glitch-throughs of different visual languages is in thematic harmony with the plot. Which owns.

I don't remember how fun Speed Racer was but it's like more fun than that I bet.

edit: I took kids under 6 and both were kinda through with this after about 80 minutes. It's...a lot.

if it were a skosh more compressed it would be a perfect movie as it is v impressive in a bunch of ways. script is super clever and inspiring it’s the best lord and miller will probably ever achieve, you don’t even need me to tell you how much the animation and art direction kicks ass. tonally pitch perfect too

It's probably fair to say that comic book characters have never been in a more visually innovative, layered and aggressive movie.

this was exceptional, i probably liked it more than homecoming which means its gotta be my favorite super hero movie.

agreed that the length was a little much. my 8 year drifted just a bit here and there. he was roped in for the finale, though, which means it is probably fine.
my one miss is that there wasnt much to the uncle aaron twist. like, why was he a super villain? all they needed was a throwaway line about how maybe he got mixed up with the wrong crowd or smthn, instead they literally dont address it. I guess the dad says they drifted apart? dunno. not a big deal!Toggle Spoiler

some interviews about the art direction.

one thing i liked about this was the use of cgi to create something entirely unreal that didn't feel like it was reproducible in 2d animation or live-action. also, the general aesthetic is the most a film has leaned into pop art overload since like speed racer?

That's the benchmark I'm using for it. I was really taken with how this mobilized that broken stereoscopic look, which to me read as "I took off my glasses for a moment" but the animators were going for the offset lines of 2D paper comic books.

Also: Jake Johnson A+ voice work

good call on the speed racer reference. it’s pretty amazing tho that this is the closest analogue to it visually and it still isn’t quite caught up with what the wachowskis were pulling off 10 years ago

This was the first superhero movie I've seen entirely unspoiled (aside from trailers) in ages and this reveal caught me completely off-guard and made me so happy.
